HELP !!!!!!!!!!! whats considered a 64&1/2 vs 65 mustang ?

I recently purchased a early Mustang. Real early, this thing has a generator. the number is 1612XX on the car's ID plate. It's a real diamond in the rough. here's whats on the title -5F07D1612XX I know its worth something at least more than the $200.00 I paid for it.........The car has been repainted and the owner didn't bother to have the cars ID plate in the door covered when painted so now its got a seriously thick coat of paint over the ID plate.....I was told not to attempt to use paint remover on it as it will remove the black ink on the ID plate. How else can I clean it off. It's thick too......

Whats considered a 64 1/2 VS. 65 ?

I think a D code engine with a gen. would be concidered a 64.5.

Is the gas cap attached to the car via a wire ring? 64s didn't have that 65s did.

How long is the script on the fender that says "Mustang" they're shorter on 64s.

Where is the off position on the blower motor controls? If its in the middle then its a 64 all the way to the left is 65.

If it has a V8 and its a 260 not a 289 thats a 64.

The seat belt attachment points to the floor are different on the 64s as well if it has seat belts.

These differences may or may not be present as it depends soley on the production date but these are some rough guidelines.

Wow!!!!! the gas cap does NOT have the wire. The Mustang name plate is small. And the seat belt attachments are basically rings. I don't know about the fan yet as I haven't put a battery in the car yet. I'm trying to have keys made becasue the owner couldn;t find them. Looks like new locks are cheaper too.........

There is a difference in the hood as well.

On the front, on each side by the headlight, some sheetmetal is pointed down, about 1/4 inch or so. There is a beveling of the heaflight bucket to correspond to this.

65s made the hood straight, and eliminatated the bevel.

I wish I had pictures, as my description is iffy at best.

Those are good indicators, but not concrete. My car was built on 4 Nov64. It's a 65 car. It has a ring on the gas cap, but the blower off position is in the middle.

One other indicator is the front edge of the hood. the two curved edges on the front of the hood are rolled down with a 1/8" to 1/4" lip on the bottom. The 65 hood did not have any rolled edge on the curved portion on the front edge. What's the build date?

D code is a low compression 289 4V made to run on reg fuel. I think it was 64.5 only. My 65 fastback has a center off heater control and clip on door handles these are not good indecators of a 64.5. The gen. is a sure fire sign of a 64.5 too. Hood and head light door are differant on a 64.5 but were replaced with 65 parts if car was in a accident.
