Rebuilt 289 won\'t start

Triple check to make sure you're not 180 out, too. You have to feel that "whoosh" out the plug hole as the #1 comes up to the top - sounds like you've done that, but it's a pretty common "oops" on a new rebuild. (at least for me).

Rebuilt 289 won\'t start

Hey,
When i rebuilt my 67 with a 289, i had the same problem. I had a vacuum leak in the gasket that sits between the intake manifold and the carb...
Just an idea...

I had the same problem with my 289 when I rebuilt it. The timing has to be perfect?? When I say that set it up right on TDC and go from there....maybe a little BTDC. Once she starts you'll be fine just that first inital start is the bugger. Also what carb are you using? I have a holley 650 Double pumper and the floats wern't set right and it was flooding the crap out of the engine...two problem at once!! If it's poping when the throttle is hel wide open try holding the throttle wide open when your starting it....JUST BE CAREFUL!!! She may backfire. Let us know how it turns out.

It's alive! I got that thing running after 15 years! Let me tell you guys what was wrong. My rocker arm adjustment was too tight. I checked for the puff of air at spark plug hole #1. It was fine. Later, I figured I'd double check everything. I though maybe I should check all of the spark plug holes while I was there. I got to #2 and realized there was no air movement at all. So I backed out each rocker arm nut about one full turn. And now my 289 is running for the first time since 1990. Thanks for all of your help. I'll see you all at the car shows.
