I know I'm not much of a mechanic , but I recently bought a 1965 Mustang with a 4 speed, 4 barrel carb, The carb is not the orginal and won't run properly so I bought one on E-bay the guy said was off a 65 with a 4-barrel. I looked on different sites and is there a difference between a Autolite and a Motorcraft 4 barrel carb? Thanks Shooter

Only real difference is Ford changed the name. Should be the carb with the removable top and about a 450 CFM good carb but not much there. If you want to stay with a Ford type carb for the year and go bigger, get one of a 390 or 410 engine. They're around a 600 CFM rating

Hi there, There wre two commonly used 4bbl's back then and they were both Ford Autolite 4100 series. the smallblock version had the 1.08 bore and the big block version was 1.12 bore. The 1.08 was 450cfm and the1.12 was 600cfm just as the gentleman

said. These were very easy to work on and were very streetable.
These also used mechanical secondaries that were adjustable from fullon to barely there depending on your needs. Very nice. you say it is not working properly. Tell me the symptoms and I might be able to help.

I've never come across any Autolite 4100 series carb that had mechanical secondaries, there were all always vacuum secondaries. What engines came with a 4100 with mechanical secondaries? If there is one out there, I would love to find one!! Any extra info you could post regarding this?
Thanks!
Mike

Hi Mike.
The carburetors I am referring to are definitely mechanical secondaries. In fact I just bought one 2 weeks ago. It has an adjustable secondary actuator rod that is tied in to the accelerator pump lever. It allows you three positions of travel of the secondary lower throttle plates by a roll pin that can be inserted into one of three different holes located on the secondary throttle plate lever arm.. If you would like to see a picture of the 4100 simply go to www.ponycarburetors.com. Click on 4100/2100 tab and there will be apicture of one. You can see the mecanical secondary on it. It is possible that you may be thinking of some of the 4100 series Holleys that Ford also used on some of their vehicles and yes those did come with vacuum secondaries. But THE ORIGINAL question posted here referred to an Autolite 4100 series 4bbl carb and allthe ones I ever saw or knew of used mechanical secondaries. These could be found on hipo 289s Old big block Galaxiie 500s And even on 352s in T-Birds.Just to help you out these 4100s were also referred to as "coffin" carbs because of the one piece top "lid" that sealrd the top of the carburetor. I hope this clears it up for you.
Sincerely.....Robert

I did want to mention that not all 4100s came with the adjustment on the secondary travel. In fact one of the main reasons I bought mine was because of that very feature and the unbelievable low price of 152.00 dollars and the carb was totally restored. If you are really looking to get one ,there are acouple for sale on Ebay. Go to their website and type in Autolite 4100 carburetor in the search box aaand the list will pop up with pictures

Robert,
I am very familiar with the 4100, I know what one looks like when compared to the Holleys and all. I have dealt with many 4100's in my time, in fact I have two left of about a dozen I had acquired and sold in the past 3 months...and none of them ever had a mechanical secondary. What is your engineering code on the base? I am really curious, in the last year, I have had at least 30 or so that I have purchased and re-sold...never found a single one with a mechanical secondary. If there is a mechanical secondary unit available, I would love to see a picture showing it. This would be the fabled beast I have been looking for...and the ones on Ebay, all the ones I see are vacuum secondaries....
Please don't take my disbelief personally, it's just I have never encountered a mechanical secondary 4100 ever, and I probably have had my hands on at least 200 or so 4100's in my lifetime, spanning all the production years...so since you have one, post some pics so I can see this unit...it's kind of my unicorn, I have heard of it...just never seen or captured it! Anyone else out there ever had a mechanical secondary 4100?
Mike
Oh yeah, before I forget...you got a completely restored 4100 for $152? Mechanical secondaries or not...that is a good deal!

Hey there..... Yea ,you are absolutely right. From the factory they did come as vacuum secondaries. I totally misstated myself there. The unit I bought is actually a vacuum secondaries however( and this is what I was trying to say before) It does have the mechanical link from the primary throttle shaft to the secondary throttle shaft. This maybe an addon option or something like that but it really does turn the unit into a mech. secondary with adjustments as I had sated before. This was the
reason for my mistatement before. If you are interested in this apparently unusual setup I can tell you that this carb was redone and sold from Tims' Thunderbirds originallyI got the unit from the person who bought it from them. Perhaps a call to them might clear this up. I can also tell you that the secondary link system looks original to thecarb. In otherwords, it has the same aging on it. It doesn't look like an out of place piece..Perhaps it was a special Ford setup for racing or for their high powered muscle cars. You have me really curious now as to what I have here. But I stand corrected on the vacuum secondaries. My apologies for any confusion this may have caused

I knew it was too good to be true!! I was driving myself crazy thinking that how in the world could I have handled over 200 hundred of these carbs and never seen a mechanical unit...now I see I am not crazy after all...well, not that crazy anyhow. I am curious too about the set up you have, maybe you managed to get a one off factory piece or something, but if you get a chance, post a few pics so someone here on this board who is in the know may be able to shed a little light on it.
I've seen Tims Thunderbirds before, and I've always heard good things about them...and hearing about the deal you scored, guess that just goes to confirm it.
