429/460 Number 8 header tube is glowing

I noticed the other day while I was warming up my 69 Mustang that the Number 8 header pipe was glowing. I could only see it when it did not have direct light on it. I also had to tighten down that same tube down b/c the header bolts came loose from the head about a month ago. Oil and Temp seem good outside of that and I am not hearing any strange noises. All the other pipes coming off the heads do not seem to be glowing.... All the pipes are Ceramic coated and that one I have header wrap on it since it is close to my brake booster.

There is probably an air pocket in that vicinity, and it's not flowing by enough to cool it. what about the #4? Are there any objects on that side that would restrict or Re-Direct the airflow from getting to the last tube?

I would not figure there would be anything restricting the air flow unless it was some silcon but I would not imagine enought to stop the airflow that much. Some one told me that it my be a vaccum leak on the intake maifold by the #8. Number 4 did not seem to be having the same issue just 8.

I'm talking about an air pocket under the hood due to the dynamics involved with the air flowing past the engine to either side and below. For instance. My '46 Willy's has a '73 2.0L Pinto engine, the exhaust is on the pass side, and the muffler is 4' from the exhaust manifold the end of the tail pipe is 2' from the muffler, the 1st 3 feet of exhaust pipe do not glow but the last foot before the muffler begins does, and I discovered then that the pipe glowed where the 3rd member directed the flow of air away from that portion of the pipe, but not before that part where it was closer to the engine and not after it... Therefore it is my opinion that the one hedder pipe on #8 you have is either a thinner gauge of material (unlikely) or that the air flow in that particular area is disrupted or that you are pulling in fresh air between the hedder and the head, and the unburnt fuel is re-igniting in the Oxygen rich atmosphere and heating up the pipe that way. I really see no other reason, unless I'm overlooking something so simple that it could bite me....

Very well... I can understand that, seeing as the brake booster would be keeping full air flow as well as the steering shaft, and it was sitting in the garage keeping air from flowing over it.. I did notice tonight that the number 4 glows a bit. No where near as bright.

What kind of timing curve are you running? Retarded timing will make them glow.

I would bet that your timing is too far retarded. I'd check that before you do anything, its the #1 reason headers will glow. Not to mention it means you are probably leaving some power on the table. I'd set it to no less than 10 BTDC, but probably more like 14. The problem is, you really need to see what your entire curve is to make sure you arent over-advancing at high rpm. Regardless, check it, if its less than 10, move it to 10
