351C Heads swap

I was wondering if anyone has ever put 351C 4V closed chamber heads on a 289, or if it is even possible. Thanks for the help

I know you can do that, but you have to make some mods to the heads and get a spwcial manifold. 4V heads work much better on 400 inch motors though, I would look into some aussie 2v's for street/strip use.

http://www.darkhorseracing.net/clevor_head_mod.htm
this link shows the mods necessary to the heads

http://www.pricemotorsport.com
this company sells the manifolds, B & A style, plus they sell adaptors to use stock intakes for different combos (351W with 351C 4V heads, 302 with 351C heads, etc...) plus some other items for the combos too, thermostat housings, water bypass, etc...

Look around the Ford Muscle archives (do a search for Clevor...that is the nick name for a Cleveland headed Windsor engine) there are many posts on the topic...better yet, do a PM to 393Clevor, he has good info on the subject since he's done it, helped me out with many questions I had.

Be prepared though, since you've posted this question, you will get a lot of people responding with the comments of "why bother doing it, when aftermarket heads will do so much better?" I am planning on doing this combo myslef one day, just because I like to do things that are challenging and different.

You can sometimes find heads on Ebay that are already prepared, but be careful when buying parts off Ebay, especially parts that are 30+ years old! You can sometimes find the intakes or adaptors on there for decent prices.

Just a last thought, the new 351C aluminum heads that are out there, are set up with the marks on them so you know where to do the mods necessary. These heads are aluminum versions of the Aussie 351 2V heads, which are a good choice for street use.

If you go ahead and give it a try, let us that are fans of the Clevor know how your progress goes! And good luck!
Mike

Swap out the crank with a 302, use Boss 302 pistons{trw #L2324}, the connecting rod will be correct length, 5.155 inches for 289 and Boss 302. 302,s and 5.0 use 5.090 rods. Use a Boss intake with the modified cooling as listed on Dark Horse and you have made a Boss 302 engine. You can up grade to 289 hipo rods the Boss uses. These rods are the exact same ones used on Boss engines and are much cheaper to find used, 3/8 rod bolts instead of 5/16. Cleveland 4v closed chamber heads are the same as a Boss head except for the cooling holes. Windsors and Boss engines flow water thru the intake. Clevelands don't. You can find a used intake for about $200 and used pistons for about $150.

If you use headers with this engine combo in an early mustang ,you may have to use Boss instead cleveland because of slightly different bends for fitment although cleveland headers may fit.

302 crank, 289 rods and pistons, 4V closed chamber heads. What kind of compression ratio would this yield (about)

Your compression should be between 10 and 11:1 depending on whether stock bore or .030 pistons are used and gasket thickness.
