66 falcon rearend to a 66 mustang

will a 66 falcon rearend (5bolt) with a 289 all fit right into my 66 mustang coupe? the 289 is probably locked beacause it does not have the timing cover, is it worth rebuilding? the car is about 3 blocks away from where i live and they want $85 dollars for the whole car. Is this a good buy? Is this a block and heads worth rebuilding, I dont care about matching numbers i was planning to rebuid an engine anyway. sorry bout all the questions but i am new to mustangs. any help would be very helpfull

The spring perchs are the same width. The total width, from wheel axle flange to flange, the Falcon is less then one inch total width more. Not enough to notice. The engines and trans are the same. The driveshaft might be longer is the only difference you'll probably have. My opinion, buy the car. Sell the shell. You'll get your money out of it. Even if you but your old stuff in it. 64-66 Stangs came from the early Falcons. And later the first big Torinos/Fairlanes came from the last year 70 Falcons.

Correction, I looked at the wrong year of Falcon, 66 Falcon is exactly the same in spring and axle widths. Same Ford part numbers. Actually 66-70 Falcons all used the same rearend.

Actually, the width and spring perch distances are different from the '66 Falcon to the '65-'66 Mustang.

so its not even worth buying? what about the 289 in it, is that worth buying eventhough it will need to be rebuild?

According to all my manuals they're the same. Get a tape measure and find out for yourself.

Somebody had a website link with all the correct widths for the different years, you might try doing a search.

Measure the rear end. If your're thinking of swapping in a 5 bolt block you will need the 5 bolt tranny too. I would look into that.

Oh, after reading it closly you're saying a 5 bolt rear end. I think the 66 Falcon had the same rear dimensions as a 67 Mustang. Basically, it will bolt up, but the tires will stick out more than a stock 66 Mustang rear end.
