is it possible to interchange a three speed tailhousing with a four speed tailhousing?

it was an inch longer. here lies the problem: the threads to the shifter mount on the 4spd tailhousing were tapped out to a larger unknown diameter. the aftermarket bolts are too small. now i guess i have to find hardware store bolts (pain in the a**)
