PROPER ORDER OF PISTON RINGS ! ! !

Hi Guys

QUESTIONS PLEASE:

Question#1- In what order do I insert my piston rings. I lost the info sheet that comes with the dore piston rings.

Question#2- Do I put motor oil between and on the rings after I install 'em ?

Finally #3- I not quite ready to install the piston YET. However, can I intall the piston rings and just lay the pistons aside till I ready to install the pistons into the cylinders ?

Thanks for putting up with this newbie.
GOD BLESS all you guys.

Clamp the piston and connecting rod assembly into a bench vise for holding. Wrap rod in rapgs to stop possible sscarring. In looking from the piston dome, usually the order is to install the oil control ring first, then upwards towards the main compression ring. Watch it here too in that there is an upper and lower surface to each ring. They may be random set into the box, but that is not how they are placed. Ought to be instruction packaged with your purchase.

Rotate the gaps as per official manual, or per any included poop sheet that came along when they were purchased. Honest Charley Speed shop had a special poop sheet on where to place gaps for more Go.

Wash down the piston/rings/connecting rod. Then shoot oil onto everything. Down into the grooves too. Exercise everything, then place into common clear plastic kitchen bags until installation time. Later on, give one final look as to ring gaps before putting on the ring compressor. Oil the cylinder walls, then whack em in. Shoot a ring of oil around top of dome gap, then on to next one.

Keep your hands clean when installing them too.

Wm.

I'm, working from memory here so anyone feel free to correct or confirm my advice.

If you haven't done so you may want to place rings in the bores they will end up in ... square them up in the cylinder and check gap ... need approx .004 gap per inch of bore ... four inch bore needs about .016.

You may already have a handle on that but I thought it was worth mentioning.

Also,

If you have "moly" rings the one with the shiny edge goes on top and as stated the rings have a top and bottom usually they have a dot on one side and that dot goes "UP" toward the crown of the piston. you might notice one edge being "beveled" as well.
