building a 331 Stroker

Hey Guys,

I have a new 307 (289 w/302 crank & rods) with 1500-2000 miles. This combo has been balanced and converted to a roller. Basically all the parts are new. I want to convert to a 331 using the stroker idea. However, as my pistons/rings are new and on their way to being "bedded in" in this block, I would like to keep them and just change out the rods for 5.40s (if they work) and the crank for a 3.25 throw and have the whole shootin match balanced with a new damper and flexplate.
I know to do this, I need to consider the total length of a 331 kit piston and rod from the top of the piston to the center of the rod big end.
This will save me rings/pistons/installation time and any potential 'boring ssues", as the walls are in super condition.
I'm not trying to "cheap' my way though this, but, to use parts that are still hardly used!
Thanks for any constructive thoughts, considerations, or ideas.

You need different pistons...the math won't work for any common rod length...

building a 331 Stroker

Hey Barry,
Thanks for the input. Yea, I'm learning it won't work. So, I'm thinking of rebuild her as is, i.e 307 and using the money to add a set AFR 165s. At least, I 'll be reducing weight!

Thanks again,

Can I ask what makes it a 307? Or are you just rounding up a .030 over 302 (what most call a 306)? Sorry curiosity got the better of me =).

Also, VERY often...guys would do better to buy good heads for their 302's, rather than buy a stroker kit and rebuild their motor, reusing the stock heads. A stroker with stock heads is going to run minimally better than your old motor did. I mean sure, it'll have more torque, but what's that really going to get you? More piles of burned rubber? Your 302 already roasts the tires through first gear and into second anyhow.

Now...if you buy good heads however...and I always recommend one size larger (at least) than you think you need...you're improving your 302 immensely where it needs it, up top, and...whenever you DO decide to do that stroker (because you will, I promise), you'll have a top end capable of at least feeding it to some extent (if you listened to me about going one size larger than you think you need!). Your 302 will run great on a 185-195-200cc head, your 331/347 will take full advantage of it and not be choked off!

Again bud, great choice (other than the smallish port size!) in picking heads over the stroker kit. It will really make you a good bit happier in the long run!

Cris
