How to clean the engine inside?

Hello, I am rebuilding my engine from my mustang. At the inside of the engine, behind the freeze plugs on the block and inside the cilinder heads there is a lot of rusty dryed cooling water and stuff on the iron. How is the best way to clean my engine? Can I do this on my own or do I better take the parts to a machine shop? Is there a specific way engine builders clean this in America? I live in Belgium, and here aren't a lot off specialized engine builders of old cars. Greetz, Kurt.

Take it to a machine shop and have them put it in a Parts Washer machine. It is a VERY large Machine with high pressure jets shooting heated water with a special cleaning agent that get's the block very clean. This will remove most of the junk from your engine.

If you are on a budget, use a product called LIME AWAY, or Rust and Lime Remover, spray it or pour it into the block and let it sit a while then wash it out with a garden hose and a spray nozzle.

I recommend you remove all the block plugs before rinsing.

I'll agree with what FE said, but even on the cheap you can take it down to a self-service car wash and take advantage of a high pressure spray instead of relying on a garden hose.

Yep - machine shops around the world put the block either in a "hot tank" where the block is put in a bath of caustic soda, or in a spray booth, where a bunch of jets of the same liquid are sprayed at the block. Either way, it removes rust, scale, just about anything. Any machine shop that rebuilds iron block engines should be able to help you out, no matter what the brand.

Be sure that you put oil in the cylinders after you get it back, as the iron will start rusting immediately.
