Roll bar posistion

I just received my roll bar for my 65 fastback. This is the same style that came from the factory for a 67 Shelby. I want to make sure I locate it correctly.

The floor area where the bottom plates mount has a raised lip that you can make out in this picture. Not sure where the bottom plates should be with respect to the lip at the back.

Can anyone help me out here.

Thanks,

Jeff

The key is having it close enough to the driver's head to protect you. Try and tie it in to the subframe also and plates ynder the car body.

Depends on what you want. If this car will be used at the strip at all, you'll need to go by the NHRA or IHRA rule book for the main hoop location. Basically, the restrictions are no more than 6" back from the driver's helmet and no more than 5" from the roof bar to the top of the helmet. Side bar must pass between the driver's shoulder and the elbow.

Note, there is no "subframe" on a 65 and the rule books do not allow you to consider connectors as a "frame". On a unibody car, the floor plates must be 6 x 6. You only need under floor plates if you bolt it in. If you weld it, you only need top plates. That picture does not show a 6 x 6 plate. If you're using that tiny thing, it'll never pass tech on a drag strip.

This is all kinda moot I suppose if the car doesn't go at least 11.49 (7.49). For road race, I'd refer to maybe SCCA rules or something.

If the install is just for lookie-loo with no side bars, then put it wherever you like because it's for show only. If you're going racing, I'd do it up right. I've seen what happens to a car that has a suspension failure and rolls at "only" 86 MPH.

I'll taka a look at my Shelby literature tonight and see if I have any factory pics of the roll bars. I know on the '67 the bar comes through a grommet in the side trim so that may help with the locating. Stu

Hey Jeff,

I looked through my pics but no dice. Nothing that gives a good look at the mounting point. If you're in a real jam boot over to Legendary Motors in Milton maybe they have a Shelby in the shop you can take a look at if you ask nicely! ( they usually have a few at any given time) Good Luck. Stu
