Question Question about rear wing...

If FM had a Mercury forum, I'd post this question there, but maybe a Mustang guy can help me. I have a complete rear wing, which I THINK came off a '69 Mercury Cyclone. How can I tell if it is a Mercury wing, or a Mustang wing, or are they different?
Thanks for any input!!!

Hmmmn, I agree they look the same. But knowing (and loving...) Ford's the way I do, I wouldn't be surprised to find they were 1/4 inch different somehow.
A posting on the GranTorinoSport site say that the part number for the wing is different for '69, '70, and '71. Imagine that!

Re: Question about rear wing...

From what I recall the wing on the Cyclone/Cougar is the same as the Mustang. I had a '70 and '71 Cyclone and a '70 Mach 1 and the wings are all the same. In '71 the pedestals for the Mustang changed but the wing itself was the same. The '69 Mustang wings are a different part number because the wing was only available on the Boss originally and was plastic and used to droop in hot weather. Later production wings switched to the '70 style fiberglass type.

Is the wing body coloured? That is usually a giveaway that it may have been on a Mercury too. Also if it still has the internal brackets the Cyclone and Mustang type are different. Mustangs are a right angle gusset with two spacers the bolts go through whereas a Cyclone has a flat plate with a circular indent in the middle.

Re: Question about rear wing...

Thanks for the info Capt! The wing was flat black when I met it, but I might sand a little to see if there is color underneath. Is there a part number cast into the wing itself anywhere?

I've never seen a # on the wing but the pedestals will probably have one on the inside by the bolts.

Re: Question about rear wing...

I have the wing in storage 25 miles away, but I'll go look at it and see what numbers I can find.
Thanks again for the help!

Re: Question about rear wing...

Back twenty years ago, was with the Merc. Cougar group. Had some member go into FMC archives over same question for 1969 and 1970 cars. He found the actual wing was same for every FMC model, only difference was in a certain Black. The two exterior struts were same, but was a note that certain ones required modification before mounting.

There were a couple of rubber insulating pad types, bolts to mount were different per individual model, and the steel plates inside of trunk lid were individual per model of car.

Many dealerships circa 1970 had a kit, complete with instructions as how to modify, and where to drill holes, if you ahd a basic auto. Was poop sheet inside that told were to do this also. Cost then $29.95 each.

So, you may got one, but what does it fit?

That is true there is a rougher flat black and smoother semi gloss black. However Mercury's often had body colour fins ( especially competition AKA grabber coloured cars) And as I stated early '69 Boss cars had droopy fins till they changed them. These are actually sought after as they are correct for early cars and were often replaced by Ford back in the day.

Re: Question about rear wing...

(other than across the parts counter) I really have only seen one semi-black rear wing. That on a 1970 black painted Mustang. All remaining ones had seen were shot the body color. Underneath that body color was some very dark gray colored wing. Could have been black, but normally only went as far as primer.

I think there may have been some problem with very early Boss powered Mustangs, maybe for emisssions, but never saw one new sitting on dealer's lot. Thus (essentially) only got to see the follow-up variety here in Sou. Calif. as you mentioned. For to us, this meant there was only one wing. Must have been a stink too, for they soon were at parts dealers for secondary purchase.

Always wondered who made them, for was printed that FMC went to some outside vendor to obtain them. Thus too could have been a little company controlled by FMC too.
