Modding a '69 coupe rear quarter panels
I have seen a few pics of a 1969 coupe with fastback rear quarter panels and I am about to start my restoration. I really like the look and would like to give it a try but is this to much for a amature to take on, and does have any good links to a how to for this

If you are converting a coupe to a Fastback, you have to change the roof panel too. It is a fairly big job. Make sure the car is well supported and reinforced before you cut it apart. In a unibody car, like the Mustang, every welded part (quarters, roof, pillars, firewall, rockers, wheelhouses, floors, & frame sections) is a structural component.

I think he may just want the sportsroof's side scoops. You need to be carefull because the coupe and sportsroof fender profiles are somewhat different. The difference is not as pronounced as the '67/'68 however so a bit of blending is all that may be needed. You'll need to find full '69 quarter panels that have the support for the scoops welded on, or chop them from a wrecked car. If your coupe has good quarters you could just add them but you'll need to deal with the recesses that are on the dog legs from the coupes trim if you remove it.
Another idea is to add '69 Shelby convertible side scoops.

Re: Modding a '69 coupe rear quarter panels
I do a little welding but very little, I seen this on overhaulin on TLC, foose put fastback quarters on a converible which now that I think of it he didnt have a roof to deal with. Here is some pics I found on CarDomain that is what im talking about. Thanks again for the input guys.

The gallery
I guess this is the one! Looks like they just welded it at the upper crown and filled it. I like it!
If the quarters need replacing anyway I say go for it. Good Luck!

Re: Modding a '69 coupe rear quarter panels
yea thats it and thanks for the link. What it seems to do is give a look of a little wider body and a lot meaner look, I'm not sure what it will do to the wheel wells. And I have seen the Shelby side scoops that does seem to be a easier mod. I have had this car since i was 16 and im now 41 and ever since the only thing i dont like about the 69' coupe is the quarter panel moulding for some reason. Here is a pic of a car with the Shelby scoops and I like the what they did to the back truck lid and quater panel extenstions:

Re: Modding a '69 coupe rear quarter panels
Yeah looks like they added a Shelby convertible deck lid and extensions. BTW a 1970 coupe quarter does not have any trim on it and is smooth at the back ( no ridge) but you'll need to add the scoops to that too! Shinoda was the stylist by '70 and wanted to get rid of any fake stuff that is why the 1970 sports roof has no scoops ( he also deleted them on BOSS 302's in 1969) and the C pillar emblem was deleted too.

Re: Modding a '69 coupe rear quarter panels
ok quick question if anyone knows for sure. if you have a 69 coupe and want to use the shelby quarter scopes unstead of the stock one.. is the 69 shelby scopes a easy fit. (as in remove old replace new? ) i just wanted to know if i can buy new ones and paint them and put on. cars already painted so will i have to do anything to the quarter besides install????

Paint to match and bolt on after removing the original trim.
