Re: MSD ignition

How is the car used?..The vacuum advance will get you a little more fuel mileage if its a daily driver type car.

Re: MSD ignition

The 6a box is fine if you don't want the over-rev control.
Id get the vacuum advance unit if your just doing a ignition upgrade to a street car only.
The blaster coil 8223 looks like the good unit to have thats still universal.

Note:
What kind of cam do you have?? Is it a Hyd Roller (steel)? or a Std cast Hyd or Solid Cam (cast Iron).
This is important to know before you buy the dist because the material that the dist gear is made out of has to be compatible.

Well that can be a major problem if you mis-match the gear matierial. Ie cast iron gear on a steel cam. or steel gear on a cast iron flat tappet camshaft.

You can however use a bronze gear on either. However they wear fast and youll be replacing it in about 10000, 15000 miles tops.

Anyone have an idea on how to easily identify a cam from outside the engine???
Without pulling the intake, i dont know any other way.

Re: MSD ignition

Hey no prob!

Just so you save about $27 on the distrubitor, go to summitracing.com to get those items.
That other website was 309 on that dist, and summit has it for $282. Plus on small boxed items theres only a 10.95 handling charge for the whole order. Its great if you order 21 things that add up to $500. Not so good if you order a $5 item like a spark plug boot for instance. LOL!
Most online ordering websites go by weight and that can add up to 20,30,40 bucks.

Anyways, find out that cam type.
Any idea on what the engine came out of? Or was it an aftermarket cam? Could you talk to the previous owner? Just trying to save you work pulling the intake.

Re: MSD ignition

Why is everyone so set on MSD? Im worked with Crane & Mallory & had better luck!! Besides the Crane will fire at 6 volts, where the MSD will not start with a week battery.
The Crane also covers more apps. & has more features for less $. I have seen less problems with Crane & Mallory than MSD. A reworked (curved & tested) Ford dist. will do a great job with out problems & I never touch the HEI junk.

Re: MSD ignition

Whos so "set" on msd?
My setup has a Crane Hi6, MSD 8582 billet dist, and a Mallory Promaster Coil. That versatile enough?? LOL
Seriously we could go on for days and totaly confuse his head trying to weigh all of the possible combinations of MSD, MALLORY,CRANE,ACCEL, ETC ETC, God then you try to throw in the usage of stock parts into it as well. The thread would never end and hed be stuck never buying anything LOL!
MSD has very high quality stuff and IMO a full setup from them (if he has the cash) would be a great choice!
