alternator wiring

I have a 66 with 289 and someone has changed over alternator late model.Trying to figure how to wire to charge.Has battery terminal on rear,plug has three wires coming out of it,and also has single wire plug on case.Every way i hook up only getting 8 volts at bat terminal on back ov alternator while running.Any help will be greatly appreciated.Thanks,Randy.
