Thinking about a TKO

My 70 Mach1 has manual steering, a FMX and 3:50 rear gears. My Mach is a street car with road race improvements. The FMX is built well but does leak a bit and is very heavy. This is the first HP car that I owned w/o a 5 speed. If I bought the car new I would have ordered a manual tranny. I have been looking at the Keisler Engineering perfect fit TKO kit. The kit is turn key and can be purchased with a Quick Time SFI bell housing. It also comes with a hydraulic clutch mechanism. Keisler recommended the TKO500 for my application and gear ratio. Any recommendations for which TKO and gearing? Has anyone used the Keisler conversion and have feedback on the kit and installation? Any recommendation on adding the clutch pedal? Is it better to add the parts for the pedal or purschase a full pedal assembly?

If you are road racing I would recommend the TKO 600 with the .82 OD. If this is a street car get the .64 OD.
As to the clutch pedal; if you pedal assembly already has the bushings in place for the clutch pedal just buy a pedal and be done with it. No need to buy a complete assembly. It will save you money and a ton of time. Removing the pedal assembly is a bit of a pain.

Re: Thinking about a TKO

This is really a sunny day street car. Keislers speed analyzer shows the following with 245_45_17 tires and a 3:50 rear gear ratio
TKO
500(.68od): equiv. close ratio toploader rear gear 4.93, 64 mph @ 2K rpm
600(.64od): equiv. close ratio toploader rear gear 4.32, 68 mph @ 2k
600(.82od): equiv. close ratio toploader rear gear 4.32, 53 mph @ 2k

Keisler recommended the TKO500, looks like the 600 (.64) would be more best with street tires and my 418w. Looks like I will need to find a used clutch pedal and the related parts (spring, bracket etc)

The brake pedal is different as well. You can simpy cut your AT brake pedal down. Buy a MT brake pedal pad and use it as a template to cut the pedal down to the right size.

Re: Thinking about a TKO

Thanks Chico, It is not easy to find the pedal since no aftermarket is available. I found a set in IL. and bought it.

Thumbs up Re: Thinking about a TKO

Alan, I can recommend the Keisler kit based on my friend's installation in a Mopar, on which I did much assistance. Very detailed instructions and best of all, phone support. We ran into a glitch one time at 8pm or so and my buddy decided to give them a call, expecting to leave a message. Shafy (I believe his name is) answered and provided the support we needed.

Re: Thinking about a TKO

Greg, thanks, Its great to hear Keisler has a good reputation. I am trying to decide which tranny has the best gear set for my car. I have a 3:50 rear end. I think the TKO 600 with the 2.87 first gear and .82 OD is the best combo. I don't do allot of highway driving so I think a 18% reduction is good enough. I don't think the first geat will be too tall either. Comments on gear selection is appreciated from all.

If you use a Centerforce clutch you won't need the clutch pedal return spring.

What rear gear ratio do you have and what is your TKO600 OD ratio? Do you like your gear set up? thanks Alan

I am running 3.5 gears with a 275/60/15 tire and a .82 OD. I like the 3.50's because eventually I plan on running a lot lower profile tire. Even with the tire I have no it's a good compromise of street and highway.
Now if I had the .64 TKO I would definitey go with at least a 3.90's in the rear.
