Cylinder head for 200Cid six?

hi, i'm new to this forum and new to restoration as well, but my 66 convertible has a cracked cylinder head. I was wondering if there was an easy way (not too much $) to increase performance while replacing the head. Thanks for any help.

Re: Cylinder head for 200Cid six?

Hey Neighbor. Welcome, these folks will take good care of you.

Just a note....

Any 200 CID straight 6 Head up to 1986 will work fine on your engine.

( I think 86 was the last year FORD made the 200 CID)

Even if it is an emisions head, you will not have to do anything special to make it work, except plug up the smog-pump intake hole with the proper size bolt.

You can use any 200 head, Find them up to '86 in the Ford Fairmont like Mike said.
The 250 Head will also fit and give you more intake versatility, yet loose compression, or you can get a 200 head and modify it to meet your needs.

P.S. Welcome!

Re: Cylinder head for 200Cid six?

Here is a link to Comp Cams, for cams that are better then stock.

COMP Cams: 144-250ci 6cyl 1960-1983 (7.808 deck)

I think you can upgrade the carburator from the 1 barrel to a 2 barrel, not sure if the 250 head, you can put a small 4 barrel on it. I think I have seen 4 barrel intakes for the 250 CID engine someplace....

Re: Cylinder head for 200Cid six?

1983 is the last year for the L6-200. The later heads used larger valves and larger intake log than the early 60s stuff. You can have some fun and convert it to tri-carb. A buddy has a later version that came with a crazy looking set of smog pipes attached. It looked like the still. He just unbolted it and put a piece of steel plate over the opening.

Thanks everyone. Looks like simply replacing the original is my best bet. Any suggestions on where i can get a replacement?

Nearly ANY wrecking yard with an old Maverick Falcon or Fairmont in it...

Re: Cylinder head for 200Cid six?

I think there is an exception in all this.

I got one of the oddball 200 cylinder heads with rocker arm shafts, instead of individual rockers. Thus you need the proper pushrods and lifters under that valve cover to work. Doubtfull if you will find one of these in a junkyard for their numbers are few, but there is always one exception to a rule.

Re: Cylinder head for 200Cid six?

All of my 200's have rocker shafts... I've never seen one that wasn't...

I also have an Adjustable rocker setup for my shaft jobber...

All the the 144/170/200 heads use rocker shafts. The early 144/170 heads had adjustable rockers. The adjustable rockers can be used on the 200 head. Try to find some for your project.
