Re: Hood Clearance?
I am finishing up mine now, Vic Jr on a 351, in a 67 with stock mounts, no spacer - Holly 750 with choke
I have a 2 inch oval filter, non drop and the front edge of the filter would hit the stock hood. I am running an old snorkel scoop though.

Re: Hood Clearance?
I'm not sure what I'm going to do at this point! I can't run a drop-base air cleaner because it would hit the top of my MSD distributor. I may have to run an old "Pro-Flo" style air cleaner for the time being even though I'm very apprehensive of those things!
If I'm going to spend any substantial amount of money to change anything, it will be for a fiberglass Shelby hood which should give me the clearance I need. I just wasn't planning on dropping the extra 400 bucks until later on!
The engine is complete and just waiting to go to the dyno next week.

Re: Hood Clearance?
With the Vic Jr you have to run the taller MSD Dist, or, you can run the MSD Dist thats a lot smaller and made for tight spaces. Yes you loose that big cap and rotor houseing, but I am not so sure how much HP the hype of cross fire inside the cap really costs.
I went with the smaller Dist mostly because I dont like the looks of that honking black and red housing. This Dist clears my filter fine, I thinkI I have a pic on my recent pics posting.

Re: Hood Clearance?
Thanks for the info. I actually agree with you about the distributor. I have the "honking black and red housing" but its a distributor that I already had. I figure that if I'm going to spend around $200 on a new distributor, that's half the money for a Shelby hood! I'm just going to have to figure out some way to make due until I can get the hood.

Re: Hood Clearance?
Good luck, I also had to fabricate new throttle linkeages etc to make the vic jr work, and look well. I will try and post a pic on my favorites before I shove off.
I leave Monday for a patrol, so I will be out of the car business for 6-8 weeks. Good luck.

Re: Hood Clearance?
Okay, it's official... the hood won't close!
Frdnut, I hope you don't mind if I copy you! I have the standard flat hood w/o turn signals, so bolting on a cobra jet style scoop with the integrated turn signals is a great solution. It's also much cheaper than a fiberglass hood! I have found several scoops on ebay at reasonable prices. Any advice when it comes to buying the scoop, cutting the hood, and installing it?

Re: Hood Clearance?
CHANGE IN PLAN...
As good as Frdnut's set up is, I stumbled upon an old 60's Cal Custom air cleaner/ scoop assembly on ebay. It is a scoop that houses a 10" air filter that mounts to the carb with a threaded rod and a nut that is finned to match the top. (When you find these the finned nut is usually missing, but this one still has it) It looks a lot like a shaker hood scoop in that it is about the same size, very similar shape, and is finned on the top. Only this scoop is polished aluminum (not black) and mounts directly to the carb (not on top of an air cleaner housing). It will have basically the same effect as Frdnut's setup except that the scoop is not mounted to the hood, instead the hole in the hood closes around it. Also, it is a great match to my old Mickey Thompson valve covers.
Time to cut the hole in the hood a little bigger!!!

Re: Hood Clearance?
Hey that sounds neat..Post some pics..There are certainly many different ways to do this..I had the scoop before the vic jr ever came along so it was a no brainer for me to use the extra space.

Re: Hood Clearance?
Here are a couple of pics... I am still trying to get the hang of uploading pictures to this forum.
The hood is off of the car in these pics getting the hole cut out. The hood will close down around the scoop and it will stick up through the hood about 2-3 inches - similar to a shaker

Re: Hood Clearance?
Okay, so have a similar question, but my 67 is still being reassembled. Working on my 408 stroker, looking at performer rpm or the rpm air gap. These are almost the same height as the Victor jr intakes referenced earlier in the thread. I DO have the shelby fiberglass hood with scoop, and I imagine it will fit, but after reading this thread, it will probably still be close. To those of you that installed scoops, how much did the air filter stick thru the hood and how thick was it? Edelbrock website has the victor jr at 5.59" and the air gap rpm at 5.19" and 6.19". Just crunching numbers. Thanks guys...newbie here.
