Question 67 mustang ignition wiring

Now that we have figured out how to get the motor to run let's talk about the wiring on a 67 mustang. When I turn the ignition key to start I get no power, nothing happens, no power to the relay, although I can start the car with a remote hand starter, what do you think?

Re: 67 mustang ignition wiring

Hey MachWon,

Electrical problems and wiring are about as tough to diagnose online as you can get. However I would say, check your ignition switch.

I've had new Ignition switches be bad right out of the box and if you're using the original one, well, it's 40 years old.

As a matter of fact, I would cycle the new switch several times and check the ohm readings on it before installing it just in case. I had a brand new switch short out and fry my wiring harness on my 67. It was a true pain in the butt.

If that's not it, the best advice I can give you is to go to the following web site and purchase an electrical wiring guide for your 67 Mustang. It's only around 6.00 bucks.
Jim Osborn Reproductions Inc.

This thing is a life saver when restoring your mustang.

Re: 67 mustang ignition wiring

When you say no power what exactly does that mean?..No accesories will work, headlights, wipers, heater etc?..There should be too wires with eyelets going to the positive side of the solonoid where the battery cable attaches..Make sure they are both there and not broken...If that checks out make sure you have a good ground to the engine and from the engine to the firewall of the car...What "relay" are you talking about when you say its not getting power with the key in the on position?...

Re: 67 mustang ignition wiring

MachWon...

There is ONE wire coming out the the ignition that ONLY has power when in the CRANK position... It's easy to find.

Take the bettery cable off.

Run a jumper wire from the + batt cable to the cab and hook it to a multi-meter set for OHMS

Probe the back of the ignition's wires with the key in the ST position (That's all the way turned to the right). Once you come across a wire that ohm's out to 0000, release the key.

If the 0000 on the ohm-meter goes to "open" then you have the correct wire that needs to go to the starter soleonoid to start the car.

If the meter stays at 0000 keep checking until you find the wire in the ignition switch that's connected to the + cable when ONLY in the START position.

That's simple as cheesecake on Thanksgiving!

Later!

Ditto, ran into that when I went back to the 4spd, but anticipated it and easy fix. Symptoms sound the same I had. I actually started it with a remote the first time for giggles.

Must be next to my crystal ball beside the ouija board.

You need to get a wiring diagram an ohmmeter/test light and ring out your primary wire from the ignition switch to the starter relay it is a red with blue stripe. The wiring has a few connection that clould be broken, disconnected or dirty/corroded. Wiring on these cars is fairly rudimentary but it can be time consuming to trace along the path.

A stick car will still have the NSS connector but it will be jumpered you need to check continuity on that. It will be dangling down the firewall with the reverse light wiring.

Re: 67 mustang ignition wiring

It is too early for a clutch switch so I would say you might have the wires at the solenoid reversed. One of those wires is hot when the ign is in the "ON" position and the other is hot when in the "START" position. If you have them on back wards it won't start with the key.
