Normally when you start the car the first time you leave the radiator cap off so you can check on coolant flow, refill when the t-stat opens, and generally make sure something bad isn't happening. Did you monitor your temp gauge...what temp did the motor heat up too?

Is the brass restrictor installed below the thermostat? If not, water will not flow through the 351C correctly.

Any of the big rear end companies (Currie, etc) can fix you up. Open your wallet. 8" trac-locs are rare parts. $400 new.
