Question 68 mustang wiring questions

Hi,

I've got two wiring questions for a 68 Mustang. First, I am installing a new ignition switch and socket assembly. My new Motorcraft socket indicates that I should have a red/white stripe wire in my harness, but there does not seem to be a terminal for this wire at the switch. The instructions indicate that this wire on the switch is not used for a number of models, but is used for the mustang. Any ideas?

Second, my car has factory air. There was a push/pull switch in the harness that turned power on and off to the compressor. This was patched into the harness, which was pretty hacked up from the installation of an aftermarket stereo. I've got the harnessback to stock configuration, but this switch does not appear in any wiring diagrams I have. Was this factory and if so where does it go in the harness?

Thanks,
John

Re: 68 mustang wiring questions

Red with white stripe is the temp gauge wire it should not be in the ignition switch wiring.

There is a control switch, a circuit breaker and a thermostat in the system;have any of these been replaced by that switch? What wires are going to that switch? it may help in understanding what it was in there doing.

Re: 68 mustang wiring questions

Hi Stu, thanks for the response.

On the ignition thing, there is a red/white stripe wire on my ignition switch (my motorcraft D1AZ-11572-C switch came with the 6 pin socket and attached wire pigtails). I'm just not sure what it's supposed to connect to. I'm thinking the instructions are in error when they say it is used for the mustang because it is not used for the cougar and I cannot find this wire in any wiring diagram.

On the AC, the switches are all in place. The push/pull switch was spliced into the green wire runnning from the thermostat switch to the compressor clutch, and into the black/green wire at the ignition switch. Frankly I think it was added because the compressor was shot and a previous owner wanted to be able to cut the power to the compressor and still use the heater/vent control switches for vent control.
