front shock tower & apron ???

I'm going to start restoring my 67 mustang coupe and both shock towers and aprons need replacing and the front frame rail aren't the best either.I was thinking about going with a complete assembly from mustang unlimited.Has any one done this type of work and if I do go this route can anyone tell me where to look for resources for obtaining information for body measurments and alignment.

Re: front shock tower & apron ???

Definitely get the complete assembly (aprons and shock towers already mounted to the frame rails). If possible, get it with the radiator support already welded in as well. It will be a lot less work and will solve most of your alignment issues. Go to the BOSS 302 Registry website, click on tech articles, within tech articles is a link to a 1970 frame chart. Those dimensions are the same as yours. Before you cut anything apart be sure your car is sitting level, especially side to side and level your front frame rails front to rear. Hopefully you have a level concrete floor to work from, so you can establish some measurements from the floor to your existing frame rails to use as a reference. When you remove your front frame rails from the floor supports (often called the front subframe) drill all of the spotwelds (a step bit will make that job easier) and preserve the integrity of the floor supports (front subframe) because that will ensure the proper location of your new front frame rails (at that location). If you don't have an export brace, get one (to be installed before doing any welding, it will locate the shock tower assembly's). If the radiator support is not pre installed, tack it to the fender apron assembly's (all squared up of course) and then set both fender apron assembly's and radiator support in place as a unit, attach the export brace, level everything side to side and front to rear, then check it against your original measurments and you are readyt to weld.

Re: front shock tower & apron ???

This might be the time to consider a rack & pinion set up and struts as well.

The 1967 Ford Shop Manual has the frame dimension diagram in it. PM me with an email address and I can send you a scan of it if you want.

Re: front shock tower & apron ???

this is what i am currently working on now for my fastback. i purchased the complete frame rail/apron assembly made by dynacorn. you can get them from mustangs unlimited, cjpony parts or laurelmountain mustangs. thay all have good pricing. you can check my makin progress post to see where i started at. i also have the measurements if you did'nt get them yet.

I went with the dynacorn units also. I bought them from Laurel Mountain Mustang. This is the cheapest way to do it. The rack and pinion is very nice too but the cost assocaited with the parts is much higher.

The dynacorn obviously is a stock style unit but has the big block braces, at ,least mine did. the rack and pinion setups are great if you are running a big block for clearance but all the decent ones i have seen are in the $2000-3000 grand range just for the setup. Out of memory the dynacorn units are way less expensive and your car will retain its stock appearance. Also consider the Boss 302 re-enforcement kit.

My 69 is on a rotissiere, we have already reintalled the front aprons and shock towers. We used the Boss 302 kit and added the Total Control subframe connectors. It has staggered shocks just like the Drag pack cars and Boss 302's. I am running a 521CJ, B514 heads, tremec TKO 600, Nodular 9"inch with 3.70:1's. I have had my 69 since 1980. I will get some pics and send you the before and after if you like.
