Re: clutch cable conversion

You'll need a newer model clutch fork (and the pivot ball inside the bell housing for the new fork), probably a new throwout bearing as well.

Mustang Steve sells a kit complete with a roller bearing clutch pivot that looks pretty sweet. I've got the Ron Morris cable kit in my '65 and it works/feel nice.

A cable clutch may interfere with some long tube headers, and everyone recommends keeping the cable away from the exhaust as much as possible.

Re: clutch cable conversion

I put one in my 67, Modern Driveline, piece of cake! Used a Lakewood bell and Fork, came with the pivot ball. Had to modify the bell a lot, as most scatters do require that.

Headers were a pain, had Hooker Super Comp long tubes, they wont work with the cable on a 351, you may be able to do it on a 302. I wound up using Heddmans and have tons of room and the cable doesnt come close to the header. I like it, it takes a bit of getting used to as the mechanical clutch had more sensitivity to it at the friction point, this one seems to jolt a bit when it engages, only once in a while, but its way smoother and easier.

You will like it.

Talking Re: clutch cable conversion

thanks i went ahead and bought the modern clutch cable conversion the quick time bell has the provisions for both style forks so no problem there im running 347 stroker with shorty headers so don't think headers will be a clearance issue and also have late model fork so now just some wrenchin! thanks for your info guys!

Re: clutch cable conversion

You should put in a new clutch and pressure plate while you've got everything taken apart, especially if your car currently has the old three finger pressure plate. I'm not 100% but you'll probably need a new throw out bearing too.

Re: clutch cable conversion

He's is right, dont think the cable will work with the 3 finger/long style - too much pressure. Good to replace it all while you have it out, dont forget the dowel pins when/if you put the diaphragm type back in.

Re: clutch cable conversion

clutch is already diaphram style was already running 5.0 roller with 351 4v heads as you know 5.0 block does not have detent for bell crank so i made one and its just a pain to deal with and was just wondering if the modern unit is as easy to install and operate as they say thanks!

Re: clutch cable conversion

The actual cable install and routing was simple and easy! Literally took a few hours or so to bolt up, and run the cable. I did have to heat and bend my clutch pedal a bit to ensure the bracket lined up and laid flush on the pedal assembly.

Its the lilttle pain in the butt things that slow you down, installing the plate behind the Master Cyl etc. Sounds like you have knowledge of clutch types, I didnt, had only run long styles before. The 67 is also very tight under the dash, but it didnt take long to locate and drill the hole for the cable.

The one thing I wish I had done with my Bell would have been to tap it and put the longer pivot bolt in. The one that came with it is just about the max for height, works great but now, but I have a lot of thread left on my clutch cable for adjusting, but my fork is not as far back as it could be. The firewall adjust is great.

The thing works great, one thing I did do was put in the roller kit on the brake/clutch braket - that may add to the ease of operation.
