8.8" rear end help

hi i recently purchased my dream car, its a 69 coupe with a 302 out of a 71', it has a 650 holley, flat top pistons, and high compression heads, the car was originally a 6 cyl and i was told by the previous owner that it has a stock 8.8 rear end i would just like some information on the tolerances of this rear end and if it should be reworked to handle more power due to the upgrades in engine components, the car is also an auto (unfortunately) and has 4000 miles on the engine thanks i appreciate it

It probably has an 8" rear axle not an a 8.8 ( which is a newer axle) or it may have the 7 1/4 intregral carrier one.

This is how to tell if it is a an 8 or a 9 if it doesn't look like them it may be a 7 1/4

thanks and yeah i know the 8.8" is a newer axle but if the previous owner went to all the trouble of building the engine and the tranny it just seems to me that somthing would have been done to the supporting components of the car, is there a way to tell by the lugs? i cant recall if the 6 cyl's were four or five lug, either way thank you for the info

Can i install a 9 inch rear end from a 67 mustang to my 66 without any welding or fabricating anything to the the body.

Yes, it's a straight bolt on BUT it's two inches wider so you may need to look at wheel offset to keep wheel fitment the same.
