Mustang To Cougar

For a 69 cougar, will off the shelf suspension kits for a 69 mustang work? I know the wheelbase is slightly longer on the cougar and most mechanicals interchange. Also are off the shelf subframe connectors and chassis stiffeners direct fits or will modification need to be done?

Anyone have any experience?

Re: Mustang To Cougar

I'm pretty sure most of the suspension stuff is the same..My 68 mustang will have 69 cougar front spindles, brakes and 9 inch rear end in it this summer..Basically it will be rolling on all 4 cougar paws..lol....The frame connectors may not be long enough with the difference in wheel base..Also there are some differences in the rear suspension like the rubber isolators where the rear end sits on the leaf springs.

Re: Mustang To Cougar

I don't have specific experience but I do know that the extra wheel base is added from the front of the rear frame to the rear axle line ( to give more rear seat room) so that the front subframe and rear subframe distances are the same as a Mustang hence the connector kits should work. As for front suspensions parts etc. they are the same compenents. Cougars use different rear spring/ shock plates that I believe are Torino/Montego units if that makes a difference to what you are doing. 67's have different front strut rods and lower control arms but by '68 they just used Mustang stuff.

Re: Mustang To Cougar

Thats perfectly fine, more info more better. Thanks for the responses I should be able to get a good look at two candidates for purchase this week. I read the wheelbase difference is 3 inches, I'm hoping that its only the way the rear suspension is set up.

Re: Mustang To Cougar

When I had my 69 Cougar most of the time parts stores would tell me they didn't have the part for my Cougar. Change it to a Mustang and what do ya know they have that one.

Re: Mustang To Cougar

Thats good to know. Now I'm just trying to get a car. Out of 9 cars I've called on up to 250 miles away I struck out on 7 and the other two the phone numbers don't work. So I'm 0 for 9 but I found another, supposedly good body no motor or trans but I don't care I will call today.

Re: Mustang To Cougar

I am doing a 67 and Most stuff is Mustang but rear springs on Cougar are longer but available. I put all new 68 Front suspension with Granada disc brakes. I bought the new Cougar springs off ebay from a Mustang vendor. I made a 9in out of a Tbird fit .

For Cougar parts I always had luck with Ken's Cougar out of Ok City.

Re: Mustang To Cougar

Well Thanks for the replies. I've found that mustangs unlimited has a wide selection of goodies, as does west coast classic cougars. Other good news, the car I was looking at minus engine and trans and in need of interior work is still available for 1,200. I will go see it either sunday or monday.
