The flapper feature is only need at WOT or near for a performance gain.

Your application has a flexible tube that draws air from the core support area? That is your ram air effect. This will apply to ram air applications also.

never seen flexible tubing running to the core support on any 69/70 car I have seen. The only flexible tubing would be for the heat riser if you have one at all atatched to your exhaust manifold.

I believe the ram air is the function of the scoop not the air cleaner snorkle.

I can tell you there is a noticable differance on my car with the shaker installed vs not.

The flapper opens on loss of vaccum caused by wide open throttle. There would probably be no benefit for it to be open just putzing around town
Please expound on your statement.

There was no provision for fresh outside air on your MUSTANG (other than the SHAKER flapper). A system would have to be devised. You want to keep the choke stove hot air feature for cold air operation. There is a flapper in the snorkel that cuts off the heated air when regular operating air temperature is achieved.

Any car will operate better off of outside (engine compartment) air rather than engine compartment air. The one poster needs to study the theory of ram air.

And I believe you are correct. I forgot about the air cleaner lid under the flapper plate that diverts the incoming air to the outer area of the air cleaner to be drawn through the air filter.

I was wrong here...

Actually, having the flap stay open does allow for continuous fresh air (only a mix of heated engine compartment air) and explains the air filter element getting dirtier than before.

Again, I apologize for any confusion I have caused.

Below is an AUSTRALIAN Shaker Setup. Notice no snorkel?

Re: 1969 Shaker Intake

Take a look in FMwire at the Falcon GTHO Phase III article. There is a picture of the shaker with the snorkel blocked off. The flapper has to be removed or the engine wouldn't get any air. This looks like a factory setup. I would expect Aussie Ford did there homework on this. My 418w loves the colder air all the time.

Yes cooler air makes a car go faster.

Thumbs up Re: 1969 Shaker Intake

I believe this is a good improvement but hard to quantify the ram effect. The only downside I noticed is the filter gets dirter faster.
Now that I have recovered from my previous senior moment, what you have done is perfectly acceptable. By blocking the snorkle intake, the incoming air actually pressurizes the air cleaner asm. and runs cooler as it does not mix in any way with engine compartment air.

Neat trick...
