1969 Shaker Intake

If my 351W 4v will run better on cooler air from outside of the engine compartment, why does the flapper on the shaker scoop only open during low vacuum (why not permanently open)?

  • Filtered Air
  • Water Ingestion (Rain)
  • Icing Of The Throttle Plates In Cold/Humid Air
  • Possible Seagull And UFO Ingestion

Re: 1969 Shaker Intake

I also have a shaker on my mustang. I wondered how much performance was lost with the flapper closed most of the time. Since my car is never in freezing weather or in rain, I took the flapper out and covered the warm air intake hole on the side. I believe this is a good improvement but hard to quantify the ram effect. The only downside I noticed is the filter gets dirter faster.

...sigh...

You do understand the air being drawn into the engine is unfiltered, correct? The flapper feature is only need at WOT or near for a performance gain.

Your application has a flexible tube that draws air from the core support area? That is your ram air effect. This will apply to ram air applications also.

Yes. Some applications had a fresh air inlet tube and some didn't. The proper area to source cool air is behind the grille area (on either side of the radiator core).

Your application is a 1969 MUST 351W SHAKER?

Re: 1969 Shaker Intake

Exactly, a 1969 M code Mach I, retrofitted with the shaker and manual trans. I'll retrofit the intake flex hose. What's my reccomended hose size? I'm in West Palm Beach so should I seal off the preheated air intake? Once again I appreciate your wisdom.

Re: 1969 Shaker Intake

Actual Ram realy doesn't come into effect untill well over 150mph, Only advantages are Fresh Cool Air.

Re: 1969 Shaker Intake

My original shaker allows air in the snorkel that is heated by the engine and ambient air from the ram snorkel. All air goes through the filter before entering the carb. My engine performs better with only the ambient air. Lets ask the drag racers, will your times improve with with colder air say 60F vs 90F? Without the flapper there is also an improvment in airflow.

I don't believe this to be correct

never seen flexible tubing running to the core support on any 69/70 car I have seen. The only flexible tubing would be for the heat riser if you have one at all atatched to your exhaust manifold.

I believe the ram air is the function of the scoop not the air cleaner snorkle.

I can tell you there is a noticable differance on my car with the shaker installed vs not.

The flapper opens on loss of vaccum caused by wide open throttle. There would probably be no benefit for it to be open just putzing around town
