Re: Other Than Eastwood: Where Can I Buy "body Solder "

Yes, you have to pay for the 70% lead. Many times the phrase 'lead free' is a play on words. Many of the 'Soccer moms' become terrorized when the word 'lead' is used. There are many non-ferrous eutectics out there that are used in place of body solder. Some of the constituents are Bismuth, Antimony--et al. Not cheap tho and really don't compare to the real thing. Best regards. John--Las Vegas.

Leading is a lost Art !!!! Makes for some long lasting body work !! I've seen 1930's cars with lead repairs that are still good 60+ years later !! Try that with Bondo.....

Re: Other Than Eastwood: Where Can I Buy "body Solder "

I recently had my car stripped in preparation for new paint by a high end restoration shop.

The body guy melted out all the lead and welded up the seams, he told me lead is not the way to go.

Hi Jeffstar

The only reason(s) I know he didn't wane to do the LEAD work is:

1. Its not the EASY to work with. You need practice with it.
2. Bondo, plastic fillers are MUCH EASIER to work with.

However, that being said, Plastic fillers and NOT as STRONG as lead.
Rain seeps into plastic fillers, NOT with lead.

If you decide to use lead; MAKE SURE HE USES & SEEN WITH THE SOLDERING PASTE; know as FLUX.

Take Care
GOD BLESS

Schooner,

1) Factory lead cracked on my car after numerous high rpm clutch dumps with slicks.

2) I'm told the lead can have some sort of reaction with the body filler/ paint after many years.
