302 Water Pump?

Newbie here....Haven't been around gears for over 35 years. It's just like starting over.

I've been resto-moding a 65 Mustang Coupe and found an 88-89 302 roller block to build from.

Plan to run somewhere in the 350-375 HP range.
Eagle forged crank, Eagle forged rods, Speed-Pro forged pistons on the bottom side

Have iron heads with 190CC runners,1.94/1.50 valves. Edelbrock #7121 dual plane Intake. Reserving decision whether to port match these two, I think they're running pretty close as is.

Edelbrock Performer RPM cam #2281 (hydraulic roller), which is the 351W cam and the HO firing order.

Read here that running high volume oil pump is risky for a street engine so I'm running the stock Mustang GT oil pump #M-68. Will probably use an ARP shaft though.

Now, I'm stuck on a water pump. I've read too many horror stories about running hot. That's the biggest reason I went with iron heads instead of aluminum. I'm changing the stock radiator (2 row) out to a 3 row and may even go to an aluminum in the future depending on how hot this beast runs. As you can see, I'm really paranoid about this thing running hot. I know Aluminum dissipates heat better than iron, but it also will warp in the blink of an eye.

What Water pump do you guys suggest? I think a hi-volume is automatic. Any particular brand and model #? Do these run clockwise or counter-clock wise?

Re: 302 Water Pump?

A stock water pump should work fine for you..There is no reason to be paranoid about overheating..The aluminium heads would probably have helped the engine disapate heat like you said..Use a good radiator and fan setup..Dennis111 changed the rad cradle in his 65 to allow the fitting of a 67-70 big block style rad with the stock look..You could probably also do some trimming on the stock one to install a bigger rad if necessary.

Re: 302 Water Pump?

I built a semi-warm 302 and stuck it into a 65 Mustang that was an original 260 V8 and used the original radiator. It hasn't really been all that warm in Northern Wyoming but, with a 180* thermostat, the temperature guage stays at approximatly 180*.

I put a roller cam warmed up 302 w/ 1969 351W 4v heads 1.94/1.60 ss valves and mile port, RPM intake and Edle 600 carb, tri-y headers about 260-275 hp. The stock radiator cools just fine. Constant 180 degrees.
