68 ignition resitor wire

Ok, It runs but intermittently poorly, engine new, all tune up stuff is new , carb not new but has been rebuilt,no vacum leaks, new fuel tank, lines ,pump...then I rembered the 61 t-bird I had with similar problems and it took me way too long to figure out that there was a bad resistor wire in the ignition harness... well this time I'm asking first... is the resitor wire the pink one from the ignition switch or is it the one going to the coil in the engine harness? also how likely is it that ign. switch itself is a culprit....thanks, ahead of time...cliff

Re: 68 ignition resitor wire

Could be lots of reasons why your engine is running funky.

Less of all would be the way your coil is wired to the cars electrical system.

Yes, running a resistor is important in some cases, but will not be the cause of a poor running motor.

Could be fuel pressure, carb adjustments or timing issues at hand.

Tell us more about your engine and set up, what does not run right and what does work good.

Re: 68 ignition resitor wire

Maybe one more thing to look at, but Got good points?

I found way back when on a electronic system with standard coil that it missed when going up hill. All indications leading to fuel problems but was not. The put an Ohm meter on to the coil, and WoW was it ever drawing amps. It made spark OK, but put on one off the boat the same night, and it then began to run like it said in manual. Had to go back and un-alter everything we thought was wrong.

If the coil (a common standard one) is pulling more than 1-2 amps, it is going south. Usually shorting out one wire at a time down inside it. Find another coil and install it for quick try out around the block. The pink wire will handle the extra current, it leads to some etched contacts inside switch too. But that isn't always the whole story as to why they foul up.
