Re: 72 hood
When looking for the hood through the local boneyards or paper, don't just look for a 72 model year...the same hood is used for the 1971 through 1973 model years.
The hood is sometimes called a "NASA" hood, because supposedly the openings were modeled after some inlets designed by NASA...don't know how true, but that is what I hear. More often than not it is called the Ram Air hood...was available on all models of the 71 thru 73, coupe, convertible, fastback, Mach 1, Boss, etc....
You can usually find the used ones in somewhat decent shape...just check the underside for rust around the hinge area and where the scoops attach to the hood...rust prone areas I find all the time on these hoods..and along the edge where the hood moulding goes (either the chrome or painted version)...usually find some rusty spots there too.
You can find the reproduction ones on EBay, and through just about any Mustang parts dealers (NPD, Year One, CJ Pony Parts, Paddock, etc...), going price I find seems to be in the neighborhood of $250 to $350 depending on where you find it...shipping is what gets you sometimes though. When you
buy it that way, you still need to get the scoop inserts, and the little plastic inserts for the scoops.
Next question is do you want it for looks (in that case you need the little plastic scoop iserts) or functional? Original and NOS Ram Air set ups go for good money...usually $1000 or more, and that doesn't include the air cleaner assembly...but good news is that they too are reproduced, and the cleaner assembly goes for about $250 to $300...and I've seen the underhood attachment for that seals the sccops to the aircleaner when closed go for about $400...but liek with anything else, a little shopping around could net you lower prices.
