Summit Header Dual Exhaust Kit

Anybody ever install one of these kits? Was it the 2 1/4" or 2 1/2" version? I have a 66 coupe and was wondering if it is true what they say, you get what you pay for.

Thanks,

Dan

Re: Summit Header Dual Exhaust Kit

Ya, I just bought the Headmen Headers and the Summit 2 1/2 inch duel system. I will be putting it in within 2 weeks.

I think with the headers, was $375.00 total.

I am doing a trani change at the same time.

I did modify the header pipes though. I like the header flange that came with the headers, the ones on the summet pipes sucked. So I cut them off and welded the headmen flanges onto the pipes. They mate much better to the collector outlet.

All is good now.

Re: Summit Header Dual Exhaust Kit

I put them on my Falcon. I knew they would be too short to reach the bumper without exhaust tips. One thing I notice was passenger side pipe needed to be bent a little more to exit straight. You will know when they are sitting on the floor if yours need tweaked or not. You might be able to get an exhaust shop to tweak the pipe for nothing if needed.

Re: Summit Header Dual Exhaust Kit

I installed the same thing on my 73, the pipes are nice and mandrel bent and fit pretty good for a driveway install. My passenger side does not point straight out either. And the flanges are terrible, throw them away and buy a hooker solid flange adapter to weld to the pipe. Mine is 2 1/2" the Mufflers are pretty loud with The Hooker headers. But for the price it was good and later I will upgrade the mufflers.

I installed the 2.5" system on my 65. The pipes look good the bends are well done. I went with some Magnaflow mufflers and sold the summit mufflers. I also replaced the header flanges but it's the best deal out there for the price.

Re: Summit Header Dual Exhaust Kit

I bought the exhaust system for a 65 Mustang, 302, Hedmans, and 2 1/2". The tailpipe part fit fairly well, the H pipe worked out, I dumped the Summit ball type connectors for true Hedmans. The pipe from the H pipe to the headers was a total pain in the a$$! Luckily I have a MIG, a Sawzall, a heated shop, and a fair amount of patience. I did finally get a respectable install out of the deal. On the other hand, I also have a 68 Camaro and put the Flowmaster American Thunder system under it. No problems whatsoever! It took probably 1/4 the time or less to install and the fit was excellent. My Camaro also has Hedmans. If I had to do it again, I do think I would go with the Flowmaster system even though I have never installed one on a Mustang. A little more money, a lot less headache!

Re: Summit Header Dual Exhaust Kit

The summit system does not have an H-Pipe.... Unless you purchased a different model...?

Re: Summit Header Dual Exhaust Kit

I will never buy a kit exhaust agian. I bought a flowmaster kit for my 67 but the kit was for a 66. I called flowmaster and they told me it would fit the same. It did, but I never want to try to put one in agian. Way to much work to many headaches. It would have been easier and cheaper on me to take it to my local exhaust shop. I never got the exhaust to seal correctly untill I took it to the exhaust shop.

Re: Summit Header Dual Exhaust Kit

I ordered the Summit H pipe kit along with the full exhaust system. With both kits you can place the H pipe almost anywhere you want. Prefitting the exhaust system without cutting it for the H pipe gave me my first clue that I had a pipe to header fitment problem. The H pipe kit really didn't change the fitment issue. The angles of the bends in the muffler to header pipe were the issue. I used jack stands to hold the pipes in place while I did the mock up and then tack welded each piece before lowering the system in order to weld each joint.

So, are you saying don't buy a kit?

I'll be doing a I6 to V8 conversion on a '65 in the next few weeks. I was planning to take it to the muffler shop to have the system fabbed up. Reading this thread got me started thinking about buying a kit. I can do fab work. I have a MIG, Saw, Hyd. Press, and tons of patience. But, I don't want to spend my time fixing some POS kit when I could be doing something else.

So far I haven't read too many replies that have me convinced the muffler shop isn't the better alternative.

How much did you pay at the muffler shop? That might get me off the fence.

Robert
