change manual steering to power steering
I have a 66 mustang with a inline 6 with a auto trans. I would like to change from manual steering to power steering. I also need to know what parts will I need to do this, also what vehicles are interchangeable with it.
Thanks Mike

Your best bet is a donor 65/66 Mustang w/ PS
Here's a partial list:
PS pump
crankshaft pully
PS pump engine bracket(s)
PS hydraulic ram
PS hydraulic ram frame bracket (good luck with the frame bolts)
PS control valve (part of drag link)
drag link
inner tie rod ends
power steering hose bracket w/rubber insulator
four hoses (feed, return, ram extend, ram retract)
I have done this conversion on a V8 car. I once owned a 6 cyl (66) car with PS, but I don't remember the hardware. If you are concerned with using original parts that "belong" on this car, then go for it. Honestly, for all the effort you are going to put into this, you would be better off buying a rack and pinion from Randall's Rack. By the time you rebuild your ram and control valve, you will have spent a great deal on time on this project.

Speaking of mounting the ram bracket to the frame...
How do you get the bolts into the frame for the PS ram bracket. On the last car I converted to PS, I drilled a 1" hole in the frame extension (on the outside) to get the forward bolt into the hole. But, I can't for the life of me remember how I got the rear bolt in that hole. BTW, there's a partition in the frame extension between these two bolt holes, so you can't feed a square u-bolt through from one hole to the other (thanks alot Ford engineers!!!). Interestingly, these two holes are not round, they are hexagonal. That might be a clue, but I'm not seeing a clear way out. Any suggestions?
On edit: I found the following information at stangerssite:
"f) The frame bracket threaded inserts are not found in Mustangs that did not come with factory power steering, but the holes for them are already there. Since these are not removable from the donor car, you must purchase new ones to install."

Thanks, I really don't know what to do. I do know it's not going to be cheap.

Re: change manual steering to power steering
I think I have all the pieces you need for this conversion. I have a 65 Falcon with an I6 that has all the power steering parts. I've removed the engine today and the ram assembly is in the trunk. $150 shipped to you if you are in the US. I'll give you everything including the bolts , belt and maybe some extras that I don't want to throw out. Let me know. Ron
Sorry, parts have been sold.

Re: change manual steering to power steering
Why the desire to go power? I stayed manual steering and brakes on mine and while I don't think I would want to parallel park it 10 times a day, I get by. Is it your daily driver?
Cheers,
Gregg
