351 Windsor Crate Motor ('69 model)

Ok guys, I'm new to this forum so I hope I don't step on any toes....

I've got a '68 coupe that is a daily driver. It came stock with a 6 cyl in it, but a shade tree mechanic put a "302 from a wrecked 79 GT" in it (or at least that's what we were told when we bought the car).

We've driven the car for about 8 years and now it has some motor problems so I went to a local "motor guy" and he offered me a motor that I think may be a good deal.... But I really don't know and would appreciate your comments!

He has a Ford 351 W crate motor (C90E-6015-B - from '69 or '70) that he bought from a shop that has never been installed. He is taking it apart, going though it and giving it a little bling....

Here's what he's adding to the crate....

Edelbrock Preformed Intake (2181)
Edelbrock Preformer Plus Cam (2182)
Edelbrock 600 CFM Carb (1406)
Headers
HEI Distributor
Clutch Kit
(water pump, etc.)

He quoted me $2800 installed (including cleaning up the engine bay, etc).

Does this seem like a good deal? Any idea what kind of horse power to expect? Is this going to SUCK gas???? Any experience with this kind of setup?

Any info will be appreciated!

Doesn't sound like your getting hosed, seems to be a nice deal and you can't argue with the warrenty.

Gas consumption shouldnt be too bad. Of course that depends on your definition of bad. I had pretty much the same setup in my car before built it and i drove it everyday to and from work and school. It seemed to get anywhere from 12-14mpg depending on how often i decided to stab it...and that was with a 3:89 gear. What are the specs on the cam. One thing i miss after building mine is the "throw you back in the seat" low end.

Re: 351 Windsor Crate Motor ('69 model)

thats a pretty good deal but the performer plus cam/int/carb setup is mostly for low end and economy, dont expect more than 280-290 hp from it and it will poop out about 4500-4800 rpm, it will get decent fuel economy though. Crate motor is a loosly used term......is it just a rebuilt 69 long block with the add ons? If anything you want a cam with around 212-218 int duration, that will wake it up, and an rpm intake not a performer. Are the heads 69's as well? make sure of that........

Re: 351 Windsor Crate Motor ('69 model)

It was a NEW crate motor (not a rebuild). My understanding is that it was purchased directly from Ford for a Mustang install in the early to mid 70's and never installed. It's been sitting in a shop ever since.

Everything that is on it was original, including the heads!

Re: 351 Windsor Crate Motor ('69 model)

If it is the four barrel 69 then you have 10.7:1 compression but even if it is the two barrel version it will yield 9.5:1.
The four barrel was rated from the factory at 290HP at 4800 and 385 Ft Lbs torque at 3200. As I recall it actually got its maximum HP at 5200 and was over 300HP.
This sounds like a good deal no matter which engine you have. If you can afford it then grab it with both hands.

Re: 351 Windsor Crate Motor ('69 model)

First off, thanks for the feedback guys! I've got my motor and I'm pretty happy with it (other than the normal glitches). I'll post a picture in a day or two.

Now for a related question.... Due to the size of the electronic distributor that was put on it and the increased deck height, I now have a TINY air cleaner (it's the 6" round Edelbrock). My question is, has anyone tried the Edelbrock triangular foam filter? A guy at the parts store said that he was uncomfortable selling a foam filter because the foam drops in to the carb. I honestly can't imagine that Edelbrock would sell something that would do that, but I thought some of you might have experience.....

Link to description.

Any thoughts???

Re: 351 Windsor Crate Motor ('69 model)

I heard that if the motor backfires good it can light the foam on fire. Is it true???? But just the thought makes me want to think twice.
