'65 - can't figure out ign. wiring

My stang didnt come with keys so I had to get new door locks and an ignition cylinder. after trying to put the ign cyl in the ign switch, I discovered somebody had put some other ign switch in, no clue where its from. so I got a new switch as well. it's way different from what was in the car. this new one has 4 spade connectors, as well as a threaded rod on the back. the old one had 4 threaded rods, one in the center with 3 others around it. I've tried to figure out what goes where but I'm still not completely sure. Anybody know for sure what wire should be on what connector?
I found this pic and description:

"The wiring connections on the back of the ignition switch are, from the top (clockwise): ignition out (pink), battery in (red), start out (purple). The center stud is accessory power (brown), which we capped with a rubber plug for safety."

I've looked at wiring diagrams, but the wiring has been pretty ****ed with before so I can't rely upon wire colors I tried hooking up what was there as much as I could. I know which one is from the battery. I'm pretty sure which one is the accessory wire. There's the pink "resistor wire" back there too. As for the one to the starter relay, that one was for some reason spliced into a red wire that goes to what seems to be a small relay under the dash, below the ign switch. No clue why. I tested for continuity to determine one end of the splice was going to the starter relay. I hooked it all up to the ign switch, turned the key, and nothing happened. However, I made a jumper and connected the "hot" and the Red/Blue I found that went to the starter relay, and the engine would turn over.

Here's a diagram of what I have figured out so far from wiring diagrams

Seems as though I have it wired correctly, but it wont even turn over unless I use that jumper. Any ideas?

Now that i compare the two, isn't that first pic wired incorrectly? From the wiring diagram, the top left should be the pink wire to the coil, and the top right should be going to the starter relay. Yet from their description, they have "ignition out (pink)" on the top right, and "start out (purple)" on the top left....

Try a post or a search here: Classic Tech - Mustang Forums at StangNet

Specifically, Tim65GT has several drawings of various aspects of early Mustang wiring. He has a good handle of this stuff. I am sure that he can help you if you don't get the needed response here.

Re: '65 - can't figure out ign. wiring

Hey man, there are 4 main wires for your ignition ok?

On your 66 there should be one thick yellow wire coming from the main power to the ignitionswitch, then one that goes to the S button on the soleonoid under the hood(black or blue with a red stripe maybe), and the other (red or pink) should go to the ignition coil, then you should have one black wire with a green stripe that is B+ going to the STUD covered by the rubber nub, which should be hot all the time so watch it back there..

I THINK that's the way it goes

Look at some diagrams....

why would the wire going to the stud be hot all the time? isn't that for the accessories?

Re: '65 - can't figure out ign. wiring

actually i'm still having problems...when I reversed those wires the starter would stay on constantly, with the key in the ON position. I've found that, when turned to ON, the Accesory stud and the connector for the coil have constant 12V. When I turn the key to START, the connector that is supposed to go to the starter doesn't have any power at all. I turned the key to ON, and just used a little jumper to go from the positive battery terminal to the terminal on the starter relay, and the car started and ran fine. WTF?? I went to AutoZone to get a replacement switch, and brought my multimeter with me to test the new one. I did a continuity test, and neither of the switches have continuity from the terminal that has constant 12V to the terminal that should have 12V when the key is turned to START. Is it possible both ign switches are bad? Am I going to have to rig up a button to start the car like the fancy race cars? lol

Re: '65 - can't figure out ign. wiring

can somebody test their ignition switch and see if, when the key is turned to START, there is 12v on the line going to the starter relay (Red/Blue wire)? it only makes sense that there should be power there...otherwise how would the starter engage..?

Re: '65 - can't figure out ign. wiring

NO! and yes! My 64 Red/blue wire activates the soleonoid the red/yellow stripe goes to the + side of the coil, the Black with Green stripe goes to the center stud, and the big yellow goes only where the big yellow goes... Kids are sleeping or I'd get the books or camera out and take pics

Re: '65 - can't figure out ign. wiring

Red/blue wire is supposed to ONLY get power in the START position.
