'73 door hinge "S springs" needed

Hi,

Both doors are now flopping in the wind with both of them snapping the S-springs ! At least that's what I am calling the spring that keeps the door from flopping around. I can't seem to find them anywhere and don't know if they are not available or if the name is different.

Any help appreciated. (And yes, I did search here first for "hinge springs" with zero hits)

I tried finding a NPD catalog but after the recent upgrades to my garage everything is somewhere but not where it should be. Have you tried them yet? They do have a lot of little parts like that so you might luck out there. Also, I have heard about a Mustang cemetary somewhere on the East coast area that might be able to help you out. Gydyup might be able to help you out with finding this place.

Well, I FINALLY found a guy at the local Ford/LM dealer that was old enough and willing to look the parts up on microfich.

Why are the young guys so darm lazy? Instantly out come " can't get those old parts anymore". Fibbers.

The part is called a "Door Check" and while Ford no longer makes them there are suppliers to Ford that do. I should have them later this week. Will post an update at that time.

Re: '73 door hinge "S springs" needed

Ok, Friday I get the call and go the 22 miles each way to get the door checks. Couple surprises. One was the price. $48 for 2 pieces of twisted metal. That included 10 bucks for shipping! Rip off.

Next was the 22 mile drive home then trying to install. Can't figure it out. Hmmmph! I'm usually pretty good, but there seems no way they are going to fit. I get the hard copy of the ford parts books out and the correct check spring looks different. Uh-oh. I try the passenger door and find part of the old check down between the body and fender. Get it out and the part that is there is longer, wider and made of thicker stuff that the new spring in my hand.

Oh great. 22 miles to the dealer to get my money back as they won't even look up the part to get the correct one. Nice. With the 3 round trips to get these parts, I spent about 9 gallons of gas! At least it was in a classic convertible!

Have you checked out any other Fords like the pick-ups or full size? I replaced some on a Pinto a few years back. I can't remember what I took them off of but the only spare parts I've got laying around are from full size Fords and 70's pick-ups. I'm thinking that bottom hinge on a 73 might be the same part as a 72 up torino. Just a guess though.

Springs are different left to right. I may have an extra for the driver's side. Send me an email....
