Arrow 1973 Sprint/Mach 1 Mexican

I've been going over paint jobs - interior options for my 72 Fastback, and I was wondering if there's anywhere that sells the stencil design and interior designs for the Mexican Sprint/Mach 1 options. I've tried calling a few places, to no avail. Anyone here know anything?

PS: I'm not going to take this to shows or anything, so I'm not worried about if it's concourse correct, or if it's all original. Car was DOA but I'm restoring it to something unique.

Here's a link to a site that has 3 pictures listed on their page. This is the only place I could even find pictures. But I'm not too internet savvy so perhaps I did something wrong? Idk...

TheMustangSource.com | Timeline: 1973 Mustang

Anywaz, thanks!

Re: 1973 Sprint/Mach 1 Mexican

I doubt seriously if you are going to find any manufacturer here in the States that makes a repop of the Mexican Sprint/Mach 1 graphics.

You might try and see if you can print out the pics, and then contact one of the vinyl graphics companies and see if they can make a set for you...or talk with a local paint shop, someone there may be talented enough to be able to mask it out and paint them on the car when you are ready.

You do know that by making your car something original like that you are going to hear many purist talk bad of you for doing something so sacreligous like that....or more likely, you will get a few of the "I had one just like that when I was younger!" guys coming up to you whenever you take her out for a drive.

I like the idea though, it doesn't really look to hard a job for a painter to pull off for you. Good luck on the search!

I've asked a few local paint shops and they said it'd be incredibly difficult as well as incredibly expensive. And the interior is another problem... If anyone finds anything or knows anything, please I really need help with this. >_<

I was looking for repop Canadian Decal for one for a friend. NO DICE! The US is available. I couldn't even find a reference picture on the net of one that could be used as a copy. It is that same shield as the US but in red and white with the Maple Leaf on it.

Okay, maybe I am being overly simplistic about this, but to recreate the pictures on the page you linked to should not be incredible difficult...a decent paint shop should be able to do this with ease.

First, this is the pic of the Mexican Sprint/Mach 1:

So how hard is it to get a paint shop to enlarge a Mach 1 script like this,

and scale it up to a suitable size and make a mask of it and paint it on the quarters?
As for the rest of the paint job, it is a little difficult to see, but the back panel looks to be done like a standard American Mach 1 layout for 73. The rest of the paint job would just be a matter of laying out the lines to match the belt line and top of fender line with the paint crossing over the roof in what looks to be the same area as the vinyl tops on the 71-73 Mach 1's and then adding a pinstripe alongside it.

Now as for the interior, that may prove a little more tricky, but not undoable...you could probably find an upholstery shop that could modify a stock white interior and add the new panels into them, and the carpet, I am pretty sure you could find a vendor with a close match...seeing as you said you weren't looking to do it exactly as stock, no one without actually seeing a Mexican Sprint/Mach 1 would know the difference.

Again, like I said, maybe I am being overly simple with my ideas, but this doesn't really look like a difficult job for a paint shop (and shouldn't be too expensive if you did a lot of the prep work...heck, you could probably even do the masking yourself and maybe save a few bucks).

Or are you refering to the 72 GT-351 shown on the previous page of the link...that one would be easier at least from the paint scheme...standard hockey stick stripes and hood blackout with the custom GT-351 on the fenders:

Hardest part to recreat would be the door panels, but it could also be done I guess with a bit of effort

Anyhow, good luck on it...still think it is a great idea!

Re: 1973 Sprint/Mach 1 Mexican

Don't get me wrong, I agree with you that it shouldn't be that hard to do, but I live in Kansas, there aren't a lot of places here that really do that, and they said from lack of pictures/angles/etc. that they can only guess on parts of the paint job, they suggested I find a stencil design or a kit that would have the specs. etc. already. That's why I tried posting here to see if I could find any leads no matter how small. Would it be possible to get the specs. from Ford? Maybe contact the Mexico plant? (If there is one..) Yes I really don't care about concourse/purity, but I would still like to get the correct designs. Also I was trying to find out what type of motors were put into these ones, any alterations from US Mach 1/Sprints. Just like the European Shelbys from 71-73 design, it's hard to find anything that puts the differences into light.

Re: 1973 Sprint/Mach 1 Mexican

Tried looking up Shelby De Mexico, they did the license with Carroll Shelby for Mexico, but in 1974 it all ended. Edward is now doing business as a drywall manufacturer...pulled this from the website linked below...

"Today at age 50, Eduardo Velazquez operates the largest drywall building material company in Mexico called Grabber Mexicana. His success in business has also allowed him to pursue not only politics but his love of cars. Velazquez is currently restoring his infamous 1969 "Libre" road racer, complete with 450 horsepower Gurney-Westlake engine, and plans on campaigning it in vintage competition next year."

South of the Boarder

Darkhorse site has a nice write up on the Shelby de Mexico times, but searching the net, can't find anythng currently active for Sheby in Mexico or any other info that is different.

Apparently, you either found a couple shops that didn't want to do the work, or you presented it the wrong way. This is a simple two tone paint job. It does require some time in masking and prep, but any paint shop that is worth their spray guns can do this easily. The mask lines follow the upper body line, around the qtr windows and over the roof. Doesn't seem to complicated to me. The lower body is standard fare Mach style, adjusted to accomodate the '73 bumper.

And the interior is another problem...
The seats are very similar to 71-3 Cougar decor buckets.

http://www.oldcarbrochures.com/main....serialNumber=2

I'm not sure if they are reproduced, but you could inquire with Cascade Classics, Johns Cougar or West Coast Classic Cougar West Coast Classic Cougar Inc. :: Specializing in '67 through '79 Mercury Cougars
The inserts could be dyed to the color you are using. If the job is done correctly and with a quality dye, it will last the lifetime of the seat.

The rear quarter decal could be made by any graphics supplier. The only thing you need to do is figure out the size, which is simple since you have a picture and a car at home to reference. Grphic Express makes stripe and logo kits for our cars. It would be a fairly simple thing for them to scale up the "Mach 1" logo to appropriate size.

Grrr.

Actually, they don't. The Shelby de Mexico articles on their site were lifted directly from the South of the Border Mustang Registry, where they had been collected and transferred from hardcopy, with significant effort dedicated to accurately reproducing the original layouts.

"Dark Horse Racing" contributed only spelling errors.

(Admittedly this is all irrelevant, since the 1973 Mexican Mustang Sprint design in question was a Ford of Mexico product, with no Shelby de Mexico, S.A. involvement. )
