Boss, Clevor questions

Hi all. Well I canceled my 347 Boss motor deal as the seller could not come up with a suitable method to reduce CR. So now I'm stuck with a set of Boss headers and Streetboss manifold or my 65. I still have the original 289 from the car so I thought I'd just build a Boss 289 or 302. Can I get Boss pistons anywhere? 289 and 302 share the same piston right? If I can't I'll get a set of flat tops and cut the valve reliefs as required. Also are Boss rockers 1.6 or 1.73 ratio? Has any one done one of these Clevor conversions?

Thanks

Re: Boss, Clevor questions

Clevor Head Mod

The link above gives some basic insight to the modifications you would need to do to a set of 351C heads to do a Clevor. Of course there are many other little things also that would need to be dealt with...one of is correct pushrod length, you need to measure for that, I can't off hand remember the new length needed.

Boss 302 pistons are still out there, check with piston makers and you should be able to find some. The Boss 302 shares some components with your original 289...original Boss 302 rods are the same length as your 289 rods (but they had beefier rod bolts), the stroke was the same as a 302, (so you would need a new crank), but the pistons are unique to a Boss 302, different compression height than a 289 or 302 if I remember correctly.

Do a search through this site, pull up threads with Clevor in the subject line and the main body of the thread and you should get a lot of good info, as well as a few more links, also post this thread in the Garage section and/or Tech section...you will get more responses, there are a few FM'ers there that have done the Clevor thing....just get ready for some other responses of "why do that when aftermarket heads can flow better?" ...those response pop up anytime you even mention a Clevor.

I myself one day will do a clevor, right now it is early and for the life of me I cannot remember where I put all the info I accumulated in regards to it..I will try to add some more info later when I get back from work tonight

Good luck!

Mike

TRW was the origional vendor and makes replacements I believe.

First thing is determing the CR and valve lift you will be running. You may not need the origional pop-up design or may have to have a custom set made (at least modify the original tops).

Re: Boss, Clevor questions

Well, how does a 289 Boss sound? A 289 crank, 302 rods and 351 Cleveland pistons will all go together with only a few thou difference in deck height! Might be a real screamer.... what do you think??

Well, and this is my opinion only, I think you will be disappointed. You haven't the cubic inches to take advantage of the head flow. You would have to buzz the thing tight to get any performance. The BOSS 302 was a high RPM engine, not too much low end for the street.

Either a stoker crank (347) or a 351W short (IMO).

Re: Boss, Clevor questions

You'd want to use either the Australian 2V head or the Edelbrocks to get any compression in that motor. You'd have like 7.5:1 with a US 2V head on it. 9.4 with the Edelbrocks.

Re: Boss, Clevor questions

Yea, 302 Aussie 2V heads are what I've got. I think as its got Cleveland pistons and head it should be Cleveland CR. Ok I know it will be a little different because of the stroke difference, close enough to start CR calculations though. Should be a little screamer......
