Shifting Problems

I just a 4.30 gear behind my '69 351w fmx. when i put it in drive, it shifts into 2nd around 4500-5000 rpm(thats with the throttle matted) pretty good but from 2nd to 3rd, the transmission will go up to just under 6000 and i have to let off and then it shifts. its not freewheeling like a band adjustment and ive got vacum going to the modulator. And the vacum modulator is not out of adjustment. im pretty familliar with this. The thing is, it shifted perfect before i put the gear in. Would it have anything to do with the governor or valvebody? any ideas?

It is the governor. Your change in gearing makes a difference. There is a different governor that can bring the RPM down a bit. I wish I could remember the number - I am unsure if i have it but I will look.

What would you suggest I do?

Change the governor.
cut the rod on the vacuum modulator down 1/16".
Build the engine to turn faster.

I think those are your only choices other than just living with it.
