Question What The BEST Rust Preventive I Can Use

Hi Guys

I'm in the procees of cleaning up the inner fender of my '66 Mustang Convert.
Of which was LOADED with UNDERCOATING like TAR.

The weight of the front fender was so heavy. After I heated the under-coating the fender lost close to 15lbs.

Now that I removed all that undercoating I hit the area with my disc-grinder and brought up some nice clean sheet metal.

NOW FINALLY 4 MY QUESTION(S) PLEASE;

1. What's the BEST RUST PREVENTIVE should I use to protect the raw sheet metal ?

Finally, I live in Las Vegas and it DRY so I wont' need any undercoating.
2. What do you think I should do~ just leave the Rust Preventive on the inner fender and call it a day ?

Thank You Guys
GOD BLESS YOU ALL

The absolute BEST AND BEST rust preventative you can EVER use is Primer and Paint.
Por15 is some of the best stuff out there for durability.

Re: What The BEST Rust Preventive I Can Use

Hi Guys/Gals

I'm somewhat confused (what else is new Schooner . . . lol )

Seriously, I heard of Por-15 as a rust proventive. That would be good 4 my inner front fender of which I wont be painting. Being that I live in Nevada.

Problem is I'm going to paint the inside of my engine bay. So I don't think Pro-15 would be good there.

Do you think that an EPOXY PRIMER would be better used on the bare sheet metal I've got in my engine bay ?

Your suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Thank You
GOD BLESS

Re: What The BEST Rust Preventive I Can Use

Primer is primer schooner my friend. Epoxy primer is the BEST out there but it's still primer adn will bleed rust if left unpainted for too long.

Por-15 is sprayable and super durable but you can't really paint over it too well... Nothing likes to stick to it's tephlon like surface to well.....

Epoxy primer is best for an undercoating but should be over coated.

Valspar DTM. It is a direct to metal primer that adhears like all get out. And you can use it as a regular primer as well, as in sand it etc. Top coats well, havent ever had it come off.

FE is right Mustangs rusted because they WEREN'T painted properly IMO.
What I'd consider doing is spraying the underside with the rubberised paintable rocker spray then painting it with a semi gloss black paint. Primer and or paint alone will get blasted by the road debris eventually then you're back to rust spots.

I'll have to keep that one in mind. I like Valspar product so it doesn't surprise me it's good

I recommend using chemical surface prep on the bare metal before you paint it. I use "JASCO prep and primer for metal".

POR15 is primer. Paint that on than paint over it. You dont have to paint over it in a trunk but it is UV sensitive. I painted my trunk floor and bottom of car with it. Dont wear nice any thing you like and wear rubber gloves. It dont clean up once it is dry and will take months to wear off.

Word to the wise. Use rubber gloves with POR 15. It is a great product, but you will have it on your hands for it seems like weeks. I mean HARD to get off.
