72 brake help!

I bought a kit off of ebay. it was supposed to include everything to change out the front drums to disk.

kit did not come with new brake lines.

kit did not come with hardware to bolt caliper bracket to the new spindle.

(I bought new hardware and brake lines from NAPA)

Problems:

kit came wothout any instructions, looks to be a floating caliper single piston setup (1972 era).

once I have the new rotor installed on the new spindle and the caliper bracket attached the caliper with new disk pads will not fit. The caliper is fully compressed so I dont know if the rotor is too big or the pads are wrong or the aftermarket caliper bracket is machined wrong. Or for all I know I am doing something wrong. (no instructions from the vendor) I do have the 72 shop manuals and haynes but neither show exactly the set up for the caliper and bracket assembly, only diagrams that dont show it assembled.

I have done numerous drum and disk brakes before and dont know what the problem is.

the other problem is it did not come with a new master cylinder or proportioning valve which I do not know is required for this setup.

Any help is most appreciated as I have spent the weekend buying odds and ends to make this work. the vendor has not been very helpful to say the least.

Re: 72 brake help!

Is this a stock style '72 Ford setup? Or a new style kit using none stock stuff?(You said "aftermarket" bracket)

Also is there any still on ebay you can post a link too?

Re: 72 brake help!

Thanks for the reply, I contacted them Monday and they were supposed to get back with me but did not. This is the link, they did not send the hardware in the center of the photo, two medium and two larger bolts along with what looks like a spacer? I guess those were to attach the caliper bracket to the spindle. I took measurements and the caliper barcket to NAPA to buy the bolts so I dont know about the 'spacers'. It honestly seems like they may have sent incorrect rotor or pads and there is no physical way I can get the caliper with pads onto the rotor. Does anyone have the stock pad and rotor thickness in inches? At least I could measure and compare. The 'aftermarket' bracket is the caliper anchor bracket, it looks like it was machined but does have some numbers on it, it bolts fine to the spindle with the hardware I bought.

Re: 72 brake help!

That kit looks identical to stock 71-73 Mustang brake parts. IIRC, there was a guy who was reproducing the spindles and brackets, so that's probably what they are, since they state everything is new. The caliper is threaded, so the slider bolt goes through the stabilizer and into the caliper, then into the spindle, which should have the rubber isolators installed. I'll see if I have any close up pics of my car.

FWIW, it does not say anywhere in the auction "includes everything required for conversion", nor does it show any lines or flex hoses, so you can't ding the vendor for that. I would, however, make them send you the missing bracket hardware. BTW, you're also going to need a banjo bolts, hoses, a master cylinder and a proportioning valve. The master to use for manual brakes would be from a 74 Maverick w/manual discs. If you want to go power, just get the stock 72 Mustang booster/master, along with a power brake pedal.

Re: 72 brake help!

Hemi,

If you have a pic that would be great especially if it shows how the anti rattle clips go in. THey way this looks is that the caliper is threaded while the caliper bracket is not. So are you saying the slide bolt goes through the caliper into the rubber isolators which are on the caliper bracket? If nothing else I will post up a picture later on tonight.

Although it wasnt mentioned in the auction they told me via email that nothing else was needed except larger rims.

I did order the brake lines (for a 72 mustang w/disk) and its supposed to have the banjo bolts.

If I get either the maverick or mustang master cylinder will I need new hard lines where it connects? ALso will any proportioning valve work and is it just bolt in and go?

thanks for all the help.

Re: 72 brake help!

You could forget the prop valve and just add an adjustable prop valve to the rear main line and adjust it to avoid lockup. Cheaper and simpler probably

Re: 72 brake help!

Here's the pic of the brake caliper assembled. I also took a shot of the master/prop valve and lines. Jeesh, I really need to get under there and do some cleaning....

I do have some extra disc brake parts, power pedals, boosters, prop valves, etc. If you want to go with stock parts, let me know.
