Aftermarket style A/C installation

Folks,
I don't expect many (if any) of you will be able to give me a direct comparison of the products offered by "Classic Auto Air", "Old Air Products", and "Vintage Air", but I am hoping to get some feedback on your installation. I do not want information on a "hang down" unit...I will not be installing a "knee-knocker".

Please, if you don't have direct experience on this...just read other's responses, and save your comments.

This week I will be pulling the trigger on a purchase from one of the above vendor/manufacturers for a R-134a system that will go on my 65 Mustang w/o console and with a V-8 with P/S and Alt. I'm expecting to spend on the order of ~$1400 for a owner installed system that requires professional leak testing, evacuation, and charging.

If you have a system from one of the above vendor/manufacturers:
Did you have any fit-up problems with the condenser, compressor, or drier? Did you have any alignment issues with the pulleys on the front of the engine?
Were you able to route the hoses is a manner that met your personal tastes/requirements?
Does it cool the car?
Are your backseat passengers able to stay cool also?
Does it cycle the compressor adequately to prevent freeze-up?
Are you able to stay warm in the winter?
Does it provide good defrost function year-round?
Did anything break? And, were you able to get replacement parts?

I may think of more, but that's it for now.

Robert

Re: Aftermarket style A/C installation

I have the classic auto air unit in my '73. I didn't do the install but the guys that did said it went in easily without any problems.
The a/c blows very cold, I don't know about backseat passengers because I don't have them. The only complaint is that with the system I the vent for outside air no longer functions, but hey, that's why I have a/c.

Thumbs up Re: Aftermarket style A/C installation

I just purchase the Vintage Air for a '65 F/B and saved several hundred bucks over the others and I called about 4 dealers. Everyone I spoke with that had a Mustang aftermarket suggested the Vintage Air. Will be doing the install in several weeks when it gets here from factory. Most dealer's drop ship from the factory and only take your money. Stay in touch and we'll go thru it together.

Re: Aftermarket style A/C installation

I put a CAA in my 68 Mustang drop top. They call it "Perfect Fit" and it is, no major issues what so ever. The minor ones I had were dealt with immediately by their on the ball tech assistance. Estheticly the system is pleasing with all of the parts well made of quality components. I ordered the polished Sanden compressor.Cools and heats great. No one sits in the back of my ride.

Re: Aftermarket style A/C installation

I decided to buy the Old Air Products Hurricane System. I bought the one with the servo motors for the defrost door and hot water shut-off valve (instead of cables). So far I've nearly completed the interior installation. It's tough crawling around inside this car (even with the front seats out) dealing with the limited space under the dash.

BTW, I'm 6'2" and weigh 220 lbs..so I don't fold up very small

The quality of workmanship and the instructions are very good. So far, I have no complaints.

More updates will follow...

Robert
