Question 66 belt issues

I have a 66 coupe with a 73 302 block, 65 289 heads. I am looking for a way to get v belts to work on it. I am wanting to use the 66 water pump {brand new never seen coolant yet}. and the 73 302 harmonic balancer. I have tried to use 2 different complete sets of pulleys off a 302, seen elsewhere in this forum, and have the same problem. The water pump pulley hits the crank pulley. This is frustrating because now the questions start to run through my mind, is the 289 pump closer to the crank? How can I still use the v belt system? by the way I am only running an alt., and water pump.

I just went through the exact same thing...

I ended up taking my brand new four bolt harmonic balancer off and putting one of my old 3-bolt balancers on. Fortunately, I had three different sets of pulleys/belts laying around and was able to put the whole set-up together with what I had. I have a Power Steering pump, so I needed a two groove pump pulley. Do you have a set of pulleys for a 289? They should work with the set-up you are using.

***The root cause of your problem is going from a water pump with a Driver Side inlet to a water pump with a Passenger side inlet. ***

That 73 motor had a D/S inlet, didn't it? The shaft on the D/S inlet pump is not as close to the crank shaft as the P/S inlet pump. That's why your pump pulley hit the harmonic balancer when you tried to use the D/S inlet pump pulley on the P/S inlet pump.
