Rocker Panel Changeout

How much trouble/extensive is replacing the outer rocker panel on a 67 Mustang. I crushed mine and need to replace it, wondering if it can be done in my garage with a welder, or more complex than that.

Thanks Gydyup

Re: Rocker Panel Changeout

Where is it crushed? If the car is really solid I'd be inclined to just cut the offending piece out and cut a new section to fit and butt weld it. If you need to get into the back area then you'll have to remove the interior panel and deal with structure on the door strike face and 1/4 panel seam too.

Re: Rocker Panel Changeout

Thanks its only the first 1/3rd or so of the rocker, right under the mirror/qtr vent area. Took a drain culvert and mail box out on a back country road, long story. Culvert 1, Mustang 0. I call it the $5000 dent, as the owner was "showing me what it would do", after refusing to let me test drive. He got pissed, I got a deal.

Initially was going to lop out and replace the offending dent, but with availabililty of new steel, considered just doing the whole thing - sounds like a lot of trouble.

Thanks Gydyup

Re: Rocker Panel Changeout

I am patching in the right rocker on my 67 Cougar with a Mustang rocker. It looks to me to be a lot of work to change the whole thing. You would have to remove interior or at least pull back carpet. Remove front fender . Remove quarter trim and drill out spot welds at bottom of quarter and all the way down the bottom and top of rocker. I think it would be better to patch unless you are doing complete resto at same time. We are changing quarter on ours so it dont matter but they dont make full cougar rockers so I have to patch.

Re: Rocker Panel Changeout

I am not sure about the coupe but the verts are a nightmare, the rockers are tied into the firewall and getting it out with all the welds along the inside and the wedging in the front is not easy. sounds like the patch may be best for DIY in the garage.
