65 Mustang Coupe Rearend

Me and my son are completely restoring a 65 Mustang Coupe and we were wondering if there is a 9 inch posi rearend off of some other vehicle that would boltup? Minor modifications would be OK.

If not is there a way to make the stock rearend posi-trac?
Thanks in advance.
Rick

Re: 65 Mustang Coupe Rearend

If you have an 8 inch now, just keep it. It should work fine.
I still run my 8 inch.
You can get traction lock units for both the 8" and 9".

Only bolt in 9" as i remember is out of like a 57 Fairlane.
All others are going to be too wide and srping perches will not line up.
There is always the option of having your 8" tubes welded to a 9" housing.

Cool Re: 65 Mustang Coupe Rearend

In the next few weeks I expect to be removing a 4.11 spool posi gear, 9"er, early ford rear axle assy. from a newly purchased '65 F/B. I just put lowering blocks on the car and everything lined up fine, the shocks seemed to be extended to their max. with 2" blocks. It is located in central Florida, if interested. Trying to get the car back to original and going back to the 8" rear assy. Thanks

Re: 65 Mustang Coupe Rearend

Rick -

Flange to flange a 57-59 big ford( galaxie, etc.) 9" rear is roughly the same dimensions(52 1/4 for a 65-66 stang and 52 even for the 57-59 ford).I bought one on ebay for $300 (housing, axles,66 stang backing plates and parking brake cables) and it worked fine. If you are not concerned with 31 spline axles, the 28 spline should work fine, 65-66 8 inch axles will work. The center section and a posi setup you can find at a number of places, ebay and others on the net.

Although there is a 2" difference in the overall width of a 65-66 and a 67-70 Mustang rearend, will everything else line up to install a 66 rearend into a 67? If so, I may be interested in that rearend you have 65 Rocketman. I have a completely rebuilt 8" w/ 3.55 posi and disc brakes in my car now.
