is 1973 mustang Q code a CJ ??

I bought a 73 mustang coupe grande years ago, the car has a Q code Motor, I have been told that its a 351Cobra Jet , If that is what this motor is what is different about it from any other 351c. A guy asked if i would sale the motor out of the car, I told him i would let him know, Please any advice on a fair price, Its complete but has not been started for many years, I checked antifreeze is good , oil looks good but i have not started the car. What kind of money should i consider for the whole car, its got buckets, console, tilt wheel, tach, disk brakes , 9" RE The condition is below a driver, load it on a trailer take it home and work on everything, Its all there but the grill is broken, anyone willing to price guess.

If the fifth digit of the VIN code for the car is "Q" than it was built with a 351C Cobra Jet Engine. The "Q" code 351C was built with 4V open Chamber heads that have very large ports and it came with a 4 brl. Carb. It was Fords performance engine for that model year. The "H" code 351C is a 2V which means it came with a 2brl. carb. and the 2V heads have smaller ports than the 4V heads of the Cobra Jet engine. As far as value, that would depend on how much of it is original and how used up it is. that would go for both the car and the engine. Pictures and a more detailed description would help.

A Q-code coupe is fairly rare and it sounds like the one you have is pretty loaded. If you really want to know how rare it is, purchase a Deluxe Marti Report, he will give you a breakdown on the different options, etc.

The 73 351-4V was just that, a 351-4V. Ford used the "CJ" designation only in the '71 Mustang to differentiate it from the two other 4V 351's. It still carried that designator in other body styles, which is why it's commonly called the CJ.

Either way, it's still a desireable car. I personally would take some good pics, get the car running and put it on eBay. A car like that should have at least a chance at a restoration, not be ripped apart for it's desirable components.

IMHO, I the guy still wants the motor, make him buy the whole car. I would price it to make him think twice about just pulling the motor and tossing the rest aside. I'd start in the $2.5k range, but without pics, it's hard to say.

FWIW, the tach cluster & harness setup is $700, the tilt column, $300+, console, $150+, 9" rear, $250+ depending upon gear or trac loc, tranny - $200, engine - $500 ~ $1200 dep. upon condition, rad - $150 if original, etc etc.

I have both a 1972 Ranchero CJ 4 speed and a 1973 Ranchero Squire CJ with Marti Reports in which both are referred to as "351C4V CJ"

To clarify, The motors were the same as other lines, but Ford used the CJ designator on the -Mustang- only in '71, not the 72 or 73. It used the "CJ" designator on the other lines from '71 'til '73, possibly '74, ie; Torino, Cougar, Montego....

Trivia: 72 Cougars had both the 4V and a CJ option. Both were "Q" codes, it depended upon which option you ordered.

Maintenance

All 4V clevelands were Q codes from late 71 to 73. In 73 the Q codes had smaller valves than previous years.

actually pushrod power q code cars in LATE 73 has smaller valves earlier in the run they had the 2.19's still
