Smile 65 mustang headers

Does anyone know what is the largest header you can run on a 65 mustang with a 408? I know I can with a mustang 2 front end or strut front end but I what to keep the stock front end.I have cut back the stock shock towers for extra clearence for spark plug access. How much horse power has someone ran through some Edelbrock victor jr.

Re: 65 mustang headers

I am using 1 7/8" tubing for the headers I am building for my 64 with a Cleveland

Re: 65 mustang headers

The problem with the Vic Jr is the bolt spacing on the exhaust ports. The heads are drilled from the Edelbrock to accept a 1 5/8 header primary tube. A 408 will need at least a 1 3/4. I have Vic jr's as well and plan to tap the heads so that I can match the headers with a bigger exhaust port. Call Ford Power Train (Ford Powertrain Applications. Stan is a good guy but will tell you straight out that a 1 3/4 is tough to do on a Vic Jr. His flange accomodates the wider bolt pattern so all you really have to do is tap the heads, but be carefull as there is not a lot of depth available. A second option is port plates. This will allow you to bolt on the plate to the head and bolt a wider bolt pattern/bigger primary header to the plate. The down fall to this method is the bolts holding the plate on are inherently very short. Good luck

Are you talking about Victor Jr heads or the Victor Jr intake? How built up is your 408?

Re: 65 mustang headers

I am running the hooker 6208s with 1 3/4 tubes on my car but they fit 1965-70 mustangs with the 351 based engine..I am also running the vic jr heads and there is a little port mismatch as Cahorne said but not too bad if you take the time to grind out the ports on the headers..If you had the pipes welded to the flange on the outside you could really hog them out but mine were already ceramic coated so I just did the best I could..I don't think it would cost much power but I have not had it dyno'd yet..

Re: 65 mustang headers

My accufab 1-3/4 headers have the dual bolt pattern.

They barely fit in a 65 stang... tight, but they do fit.

If I remember correctly I think the footnotes say you have to do some hacking on the shock towers with those?
