Possible oil problem on top end

Is there a way to check to see if im getting oil up to the rocker arms??? Can I run the motor without the vavle covers on??? Or will oil just shoot out everywhere???

Im having loud chattering/ clacking noises comming from my motor... trying to figure out if im getting oil up to the rockers... I tightened my rockers up today, they were pretty loose... Also, I cranked the motor a few time without the valve covers on to see if oil was comming up and I didn't have anything... I didn't know if that was because the starter wasn't turning it fast enough...

Get a oil pump primer shaft and turn the oil pump with a drill motor. You should be able to check for good oil flow that way.

lay some rags over the exhaust and pull the cover. Start it up!

I used a valve cover with the top cut off and some Mr Gasket oil deflectors.

I have an old pair of valve covers cut in half lengthwise. Bolt on the bottom portion and start the motor. It should catch all or most of the oil.

When you use a drill be sure to turn the drill on reverse - the pump turns counter clockwise as you look at it from the top.

Re: Possible oil problem on top end

Are all of the rockers loosening up then?

Runs OK for a bit then the clattering begins after maybe 5 minutes of idling? May have nothing to do with lifter, valves or such, but may then be oil pressure related. The oil pressure ought to drop upon getting hot and thinning.

Also see if the studs holding the rocker arms are not moving. Measure precisely.

I made it with my 289 (ticking problem search), at idle no problem, the oil fall down into the head...

But do not touch the throttle, or the oil jump too far and fall on the exhaust headers !
