Is this sacreligious?

I have a black/black 65 fastback and drag raced it for several years. All the mechanical stuff is in great shape. My local strip shut down so I decided to start a freshen up job on it. I found a lot more problems than I expected so its now about 2 years and counting. At one point I just walked away from it for a while and worked on another project because I was so burned out on sheet metal work.

Well anyway, the sheetmetal part of this is coming to an end and I'm looking forward to the finish. I've looked at hundreds of photo's of mustang paint jobs and although they are fine I want to do something tasteful and nice but unique this time instead of the 2 skunk stripes and side stripes that so many cars have. That is a nice look and very traditional but I just want to do something else. I could just repaint it black but there are probably a few hundred of those around.

I have only seen a couple of other schemes like what I'm considering and nothing exactly like what I am thinking.

one option:
cap the top in silver metallic down to the side/corner body lines and do the front, back and sides in black. run a charcoal metallic seam about 1/4 or 1/2 inch wide between the 2 colors for transition. for the ends of the silver metallic I was considering holding the line back about 3 or 4 inches from the front edge of the hood for the cut across. I'll have to experiment with how to transition the silver metallic across the back of the deck lid. one way is to take the charcoal seam down the corner caps to a point and round it back up and across the deck lid to finish off. other way is to just come down to where it would need to curve and then curve across the deck lid at the line where it starts to bend down.

second option:
similar to 1 above except silver metallic on top/black sides and split the top panel with black down the middle top of the car. this is similar(somewhat) to a Foose design for a 2010 mustang but not exactly the same.

Here is the Foose design which I really like a lot(who wouldn't):

third option:
basically paint the car black high gloss and spray shelby stripes in black wrinkle paint. It would be different but more subtle than the first 2 options.

If anybody has done their paint jobs in some other creative ways it would be nice to see a photo or 2.

Re: Is this sacreligious?

Looking at the title of the thread, I thought this might be about putting a brand-X motor in your Mustang. Nice paint is not sacreligious. Sorry I dont have any worth while input.

I said I can't stand him, never said I hated him...

But I probably could...

How has he done anything to effect the Muscle Car Industry?

I think it would look too modern, but then I'm an old guy. I came very close to gloss black with subtle ghost flames in dark blue candy on my '70, but couldn't find anyone I would trust around here to do the flames. I settled for just black, but mine has a black landau top, so in essence it is a two-tone also. Looks real sharp.

Re: Is this sacreligious?

Maybe your asking the wrong crowd, as my un official observation - most of us are getting a little beyond our "ute"

I too am not a big Foose fan "all Foosed up" my wife says, his paints look great on the boxier cars, like El Camino's, 67/8 Chevells, Fairlains and Comets, sedan type stuff. And if you want to be different, then too many people are "Foosing" thier cars. Nothing against the man, he does do great things for the hobby - some folks like brick houses, some like wood.

But I am meat and taters, old school - dont judge me by my paint job, I didnt do that crap. I would suggest that you paint your car to what really floats your boat and makes you say "wow, thats a great looking car" , not to be what others are or are not doing - do what you want to do - dont worry about us and what we think, dare to be different because its what you like and want, not what others like or others dont have.

Re: Is this sacreligious?

Hey, welcome back!

Haven't seen you in a while!

For those you who weren't around "back in the day" Hottarod is the guy who mounted a set of 28x9 slicks on a 1965 fastback... made a pass, and had the slicks grow into the wheelwells... causing him to go through the traps BACKWARDS at 108mph... and got through it without a scratch!

http://www.fordmuscle.com/forums/all...5-mustang.html

Good to see you! I'm definitely no expert on custom paint, and don't really like 85% of what people try to pull off, but as long as you keep it fairly mild and tasetful, I've got confidence that you can pull it off.

Good Luck!

Re: Is this sacreligious?

I understand your dilemma; mine is at the body shop right now.
I've thought about trying to do something different or just putting a set of Shelby stripes over the top. I want to keep it old-school and Shelby stripes don't really belong on a coupe. One of the guys at the shop suggested that I paint the hood matte black or go back with a metallic red. In the end, it will likely just end up with a classic, non-metallic candy apple red all over.

I think Gydyup's advice was solid; go with whatever really works for you. One request though... Please just don't make it another Eleanor!

Good luck!
