Flaming River Box Ratio question

I have a 66 coupe with worn out steering box with a 19:1 ratio. Can I put a flaming river 16:1 without running into any problems?

Re: Flaming River Box Ratio question

The Argentina Box will bolt right in.

You are aware, when changing to the 16/1 Box, 4 Turn Box, it will be Harder to turn, Take More Muscle to turn the car??

Re: Flaming River Box Ratio question

Yes , I know it will be harder to turn, and I guess that is something I need to consider, but when I looked into Flaming River all I saw was a 16:1. The only reason I was looking at Flamming River was all the good reviews. I will take a look at some other boxes. I don't know a lot about steering boxes so any help would be appricated. My tag # is hcc-at and from what I have read that is a 19:1 long shaft, but when I have looked for that I just find 19:1 short shaft. What do I need?

Re: Flaming River Box Ratio question

i ran a 16:1 box without power assist on every mustang from about 1973 to 2001 with 7" wheels and then 8.5" wheels on the front with +2 Caster and steering effort was minimal and i got really skinny weak arms. i installed a Sweet mfg. servo and slave cylinder after putting 11" wide wheels with 315-35-17 wheels and tires on the front of my 65 fastabck with a 392W stroker in it !

Re: Flaming River Box Ratio question

We used to refer to the 1:16 ratio as the racing version of manual steering. Not too popular back when, especially if you parallel park downtown. The ratio is same (I think) for power steering autos. The 1;19 was for manual sterring only. And, if you intend to race in straight line or curved, go with the faster ratio.

Re: Flaming River Box Ratio question

yes the 16:1 was the power steering ratio and is what came on the 65-66 gt350 without power assist and my dads 69 BOSS 302 had the 16:1 ratio from the factory without power assist.

Re: Flaming River Box Ratio question

You need the long shaft btw, if that is what is in your car. Long shaft referring to the box with the one piece shaft that runs up to your steering wheel. If you have a 66 you have a long shaft. They changed mid way through 67.
You will notice a big difference between a 16:1 and a 19:1, especially around town driving, don't let anyone bull**** you.
